Today, in my country are more than 21.5 million domestic animals, 4.7 million of which are other animals dogs, 3.3 million cats, 3.7 million birds, 6.5 million fish and the rest .

These numbers , at first glance , might indicate to us that in a country animal lover . if we consider the statistics, these numbers indicate a tremendous level of irresponsibility on the part of the citizens of this country.

Each year, with the collaboration of more than 250 animals and 600 associations of municipalities, carried out a study on the abandonment of animals in our country in order to raise awareness about the acquisition of pet animals. An acquisition that must be done responsibly and very thoughtful .

Growing number of abandoned animals

The numbers presented to us , we show that an average of 110,000 dogs are abandoned every year in the streets or shelters in our country.

Regarding cats , they are abandoned each year 25,000 average cats .

If we do accounts , we found that more than 2 % of dogs in our homes are left in neglect and almost 1 % of cats suffer the same fate - This data is the total , not the number of dogs and cats adopted each year (in this case , the percentage would be much greater ) .

Most record of the matter is that these percentages are growing with each passing year .

Stray dogs and cats

Contrary to what many may think, when we talk about abandoned dogs, as many of these does not occur in summer, but in the first quarter of the year (35% of dogs is abandoned during the first semester).

Dogs who come to the kennels, associations and protective, about 75% have a happy ending. About 50% are given up for adoption and the remaining 25% are lost dogs are returned to their families who were looking for. 10% of dogs that arrive at such facilities, never leave them and unfortunately, 16% of the total are euthanized - most of these cases occur in municipal kennels, because in most municipalities of Spain, even the dogs are euthanized when they are not adopted within a few days.

In the case of cats, summer is the season with more dropouts, but not due to the abandonment of adult cats, but their offspring born in the spring. Of all cats arriving animal rescue associations, 42% are euthanized - As with dogs, as many of these cases of euthanasia are given in municipal kennels.

Only 4.5% of the collected cats are back with their families. This number is very low compared to the 25% we were talking about in the case of dogs.

It is also lower than the percentage of dogs adoption, in the case of cats is only 35%.

Abandonment and loss of dogs and cats is a major problem, not only for lovers of animals, but for all citizens. Do not forget that, willy-nilly to animals, which are in the street is a danger for them and for us.
