Why I Am a Homemaker and SAHWife

in homemaker •  7 years ago

When my children were younger, in school and still living at home I was a stay-at-home-mom, but since they have all grown, married and started their own families, I was no longer the SAHM. To occupy so much free time, I went back to work. I worked in an office as an administrative assistant and did writing in my "at home" time.

Well in December 2015, I had fallen (had a drop fall due to my autoimmune disorder called Meniere's Disease which affects so many physical and mental capabilities) and fractured my femur. I took a short term disability through my employer. While off work, we purchased our homestead property and house; hence moving. Which was actually perfect because I was home to pack and organize. Granted getting around with crutches was a pain in the you-know-what, but I managed.

After our move and we had settled in, I was due to go back to work. My husband and I discussed it at great length, figured out how to live on his paycheck only and where we needed to cut back.

Well, after days of deliberation and number crunching, we had it. Where we had moved to would already be saving us money with a lower monthly mortgage; and even with the loss of my income we could still 'sock away' $600 into savings every month. So it was settled. I called my employer and gave my notice and ended my short-term disability pay.

My husband is a believer in the man provides and I am a firm believer in the wife taking care of the home and children. We are old-fashioned that way I suppose.

I love taking care of my husband, the home and being able to expand some of my new(er) hobbies: gardening, writing, cooking and baking

If I was still working my 50-55 hours a week job, I wouldn't be able to can my garden tomatoes into marinara sauce every August and September.

Or make homemade (yes from scratch and not a box mix) brownies. They taste better when made into brownie muffins especially if you are a corner eater like me. No ooey-gooey center to deal with.

So when people ask me what I do for a living, I proudly say I stay home and take care of the homestead. My days are busy from dawn to dusk. I am able to do more around the house and property than I would ever have been able to do if I were still working an outside job. I know not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to do this, and again, I am truly thankful. Being a SAHM or SAHW is not for every woman. Some women prefer, or need, to work outside the home; and I commend them for that. No matter if you are a working mom/wife or a SAHM/SAHW, we all deserve credit for what we do to contribute to our home and family.

Very nice article. Now tell me how I can talk my wife into it?

I wish I could. I am thoroughly enjoying it. Completely different without any kids in the house though. At first I was worried I'd never find enough to do because when the kids were home and little, I was room mom at school, on the PTA, involved with scouts, etc... now, it's just me, hubby and the dog. Kids and grandkids live over two hours away so we don't see them too often

Ed approves of your life decisions. My wife is a stay at home mom too.

It was a mutual decision and the best one we have ever made together.
I wouldn't have it any other way.

fascinating! my wife and I have thrown out the idea of getting of the grid and getting some land...our kids are 9-3 and so its hard to do anything with them...maybe in the near future - appreciate your perspective

I can remember when my kids were little and we would go camping. Our oldest daughter was only three weeks old and we went camping over a holiday weekend. People thought we were crazy to take her but she grew up knowing camping. The younger you start, I think the better. It becomes a lifestyle.
Most of the lifestyle choices I made when my kids were little have stayed with them all these years. I can remember my youngest daughter, while in high school, using coupons for her shampoo and makeup, she said cause I used them all the time and it was free money. Made me proud.
