Cabinets & Bookcases: You Get What You Pay For

I have been doing kitchen renovations professionally for the past eight years. These remodels can cost up to $100,000 or more. If you are going to spend a large amount of money, time, and aggravation, then you want to do the job right the first time. That's why it is so important not to skimp the budget on your kitchen cabinets. Solid wood cabinets will last a lifetime.

Cabinets made from particle board or MDF (medium density fiberboard) might look great and be inexpensive, but you will see the wear and tear immediately, especially in areas where they come in contact with water, and after five-10 years, they will start to break down.

Since the cabinets will last for decades, be sure to get them in a color and style that you can live with forever. The ones I chose for my own home are Kraftmaid (No, I do not get any commission or kickback of any kind). I just want my clients to be happy in the long run. It's a large expense up front but will be so worth it in the end.

I remember when I was young and just starting out. It seemed like my entire apartment was furnished from Ikea. I love shopping there still, but there comes a time when you want your home to look upscale. It is worth the investment to throw away all your bookshelves and have built-in ones installed. It is not a lot of money, and if you are handy with a circular saw, you can even do it yourself. These are made from plywood and painted or stained.

Don't buy your plywood from a box store, like Home Depot. Spend more money and go to a lumber retailer. The ones in the pictures above and below are oak. They also sell pine and maple. Even if you are not handy with a saw, it is worth it to pay someone to make them. It elevates the whole room and the value of your house.
