One of the great things about homeschooling, is being about to teach my daughters life skills!
One of my hobbies is sewing. They see me do it everyday. They drool over my fabric stash.
So, this morning, I sent them to each pick out their own fabric print to make an outfit for their American Girl dolls.
My oldest (9) chose to make a skirt & top. My 7yr old chose to make a dress. They sewn their projects using my grandmother's sewing machine!
Both of my daughters are amazing and bright. They both did a wonderful job with their first garment sewing project.
But my 7yr old was a complete natural!
I believe God blessed my husband and I with our beautiful children, for us to grow, nourish, teach, and shape into wonderful God fesring people.
I try to balance book schooling with life schooling as much as possible.
Homeschoolers, what life skill things do you teach?
I am so glad I stumbled across this because it's the absolute cutest thing I have seen all day? week? ever? This warms my heart to no end to see you teaching them this craft. I wish someone had taught me at their age...here I am, nearly twenty two, struggling with my machine for weeks before someone came over and showed me I didn't even have a foot on...but alas I am on my way! They did a wonderful job with the doll outfits and I bet before too long they will be making outfits of their own ♡♡♡ many blessings and so much love!

Aw! Thank you!
My mom taught me as a kid, her mom taught her, etc.
I used to practice by sewing wash cloths into pillows for my stuffed animals... We went through lots of wash cloths! Haha!
Im excited that you are learning! Its never too late to start!
If your wanting to sew clothing, try checing out some online patterns, vs store patterns.
Online pattern makers, like Patterns For Pirates and Stitch Upon A Time have facebook groups for support. Plus each pattern is a pdf with a full tutorial as well. They make it super easy!
Good luck!

Hello @corrielaine! This was such a sweet post to read! You are doing an amazing job teaching your daughters a useful and valuable skill. I just did a post showcasing some outfits my mother made for my daughter. I was saying how I didn’t appreciate my mother’s skills growing up and I didn’t understand how valuable it would have been if I learned how to sew from her. It’s much harder trying to learn these days but I’m teaching myself and my daughter how to sew.
I looked over your blog and I see we have quite a bit in common. I am an homeschooling mom too (3 boys, 1 girl and another baby girl on the way), we do not vaccinate, we try to live a frugal life, I crochet my family clothing to save money etc.
9 months ago I started a weekly initiative called #NeedleWorkMonday! Every Monday us crafters get together to share our creations, ideas, tips and patterns and just try to inspire each other. If you ever have time I’d love for you to share some of your sewing work with us by using the tag so we can find your post. You can post archived work if you have pictures. We also love seeing the process of a project being done so you don’t have to wait until a project is complete to post about it. It’s fun seeing projects come to life and we have lots of fun sharing together!
Looking forward to reading more of your posts :)

Hi!
Congratulations on baby#5! I love big families!
I agree, we have quite a bit in common! It's nice to "meet" you!
My mom sewn the majority of mine and my siblings clothes when i was little, back when fabric was cheaper than clothes! It was great fun!
Im hoping to sew up a lot of my fabric stash this summer for a fall & winter wardrobe for my oldest..
The #needleworkmonday sounds fantastic!
I am needing to have all of my sewing machines serviced before I can do much more work.
Im also starting my journey of learning to be weave!
Im a knitter as well, but havent had time recently, though i do have a project on the needles (that hasnt been touched in months).
Thank you for your comment!

It’s really nice meeting you too! Yes we love having a big family. It has its challenges but is well worth it to me.
Well you’ll fit in just fine because any craft involving a needle is welcome :)

Very Cute post! Glad they are starting early! I have repaired more sewing machines than I have used, I am sorry to say. Have Dad teach them auto repair too. I did with my Daughter, and taught my Son how to cook on top of that.
Teach the girls about surface tension in water, by floating a needle on top of the water.

@smithslab do you still repair machines? Id love to hire you! I have 2 sewing machines and 2 sergers needing maintenance/repair!
My mom taught me to cook, and my dad taught me how to do basic car repairs & maintenance. It is definitely a blessing to have learned those skills!

I don't have time anymore, too busy rebuilding the house on the new land. A local shop would save a fortune on shipping with the weight of most machines. The last time my Sister needed repair on a machine, I went to the thrift store and got her another, she is still using it....
I'm glad your folks covered all the bases when you were gowing up! Jennifer put a head gasket in her first car, and drove it for several years. Then she bought a 1960 Chevy Impala, because she likes classic cars. She married an A&P aircraft mechanic, so she is not doing much work under the hood today, LOL! But Philip is still cooking. They both had their own Rifle at seven years old, and are excellent shots, which is one more important skill.

No problem, there aren't too many, LOL! Most I run into have four feet, and a wet nose....
I do like her husbands ironwork, and she @themyrrhmaid is the only person I have met that does more herbal stuff than I do.
You have a lovely family (but, girls are harder to raise, LOL!) and I am glad they are home schooled! Public school continues to degrade, if that is even possible.
How is your third girl doing with the dog loss? I am praying for her, that is a very hard loss! I know you are keeping her distracted, and I know she will grow out of it!
GOD Bless you all!

Thank you ❤ Im pretty fond of my crew!
She is doing pretty well. Still talks about him daily. I wonder how much she really thinks of him through the day.
Ive been talking with my husband of the possibility of going ahead with getting a puppy... But we also dont really want said puppy to learm awful habits from our neighbors dogs.
So, we may just wait.
Thank you for asking :)
