Comfrey Harvest and A Big Announcement

in homesteaderscoop •  5 years ago

Today was our first official comfrey harvest from a root cutting that was planted last August. We've pulled damaged or yellow leaves before, but this time I harvested an entire plant.

Our biggest out of 46 comfrey plants so far, though not the biggest individual leaves.

I let it flower before harvesting to get the most pollinator attraction out of it. Then today I cut it off an inch or two from the ground. I've seen videos of people doing it this way, and they all said their plants came back, though I've gotta admit I'm a tad nervous over destroying a beneficial plant in my little ecosystem.

Farmer Sam for scale. That's a lot of biomass...

The shaded area shows this herb's effectiveness as a ground cover too.

After trimming out the stems and a lot of leaves for mulch, the harvest came out to 14.6 ounces, or just over 400 grams. I washed the leaves of soil and other debris, and filled up the ten tray dehydrator with comfrey leaves.

... Now for the announcement you all came here for...

I'm setting up shop at Homesteaders Co-op!

Yup. I finally got my crap together and applied like a month ago. I haven't set up my shop yet, but it's on the list of things to do. Sometime. @kay-leclerc needs a guinea pig for vendor setup, so I'll be volunteering to fill that role. I wanted to announce it publicly now so that it'll help me get motivated to set it up. So far I've got three products that I'll be offering, and I'll be focusing on wild crafted herbs and tinctures.

I chose to focus on natural medicines because it's something I wanted to see more of on the Co-op. I decided to make it so. Herbs and natural medicine products are something I've developed a passion for lately, and I figured I'd try and turn it into a way to invest in steem too. Well see how it goes! That's kinda up to y'all cause if y'all don't buy it, I've got me a good little stock of a few herbs now :)

Pretty cool, huh? I'll probably be finishing that process next weekend with the extra days I took off. Looking forward to learning the process.

All action for the good of all.

Nate.

Wahoo @nateonsteemit! So glad you took that leap and are setting up your Homesteaders Coop shop! It's just a natural step after that keen interest you took in natural medicines and making your tinctures and all! Isn't it wonderful to be finally reaping some of the fruits of your labor? I wouldn't worry about the comfrey plant as they are notorious for growing from even small bits of root so I'm sure with you leaving the whole root intact and part of the Arial part of the plant it will be just fine! Looking forward to seeing your new shop! What are you calling it?

I registered with OtE Homestead, but I'm wondering about Foxfire Farms

years ago I had a comfrey plant in a terrible spot and actively tried to kill it. I failed. Your plant will come back

Yeah, that's what I've heard. I think someone said that if you cut a comfrey to the ground and cover with ply wood for a year, it might die. I'm looking forward to watching it grow back.

Yay I'm happy for your new journey with the coop. Exciting to provide medicine for people... also super lit that you harvested the comfrey. I've been hoping to catch the harvest and just all around super happy and excited for you!! Best wishes!

Thanks for the encouragement!!! 💚💚💚💚

I think since I can't do a #dailychicken, I'll have to start a #dailycomfrey to follow the regrowth.

Yes that would be surely awesome!!

It shall be done :)

Way to go @nateonsteemit!

I've never cut mine off, mostly because the stand is so big I can take a few of the huge leaves off each plant and fill my 9 tray dehydrator. I cut the huge veins out of the centers, so they all dry thoroughly, but the veins are really big.

And cool about setting up your shop. Will be watching for it.

Congratulations on setting up shop! That's really exciting! You most definitely don't have to worry about the comfrey not coming back. My goats ate all my comfrey down to the ground a couple of weeks ago and all the plants have leaves big enough to harvest already. I'm convinced they could survive a nuclear apocalypse!

Yay Nateshop!

Woo hoo! So glad you're doing this. You've been learning sooo much about herbalism and natural medicines, it's a natural step for you to do this. Love that pic of Sam with all that comfrey - well cool!
