Trail blazing was the game of the day. The sky was bright and the day was dry so we got out tools and hit the trails. Armed with a Pulaski, a machete, a small forest axe and some limb saws, we were ready to clean up some trail on the northeast curve of the riverside.
We had been walking this route for some time to access a beautiful spot on the riverbank, but hadn’t cleared anything out there for quite a while. There is a small creek that forms as a rain catch in the wet season here, and we often dunk our boots on accident off that slippery slope. Building a simple branch bridge would suffice.
Austin took his Gransfors Brooks Small Forest Axe so we could clean up some fallen maple above the waterfall, and possibly scavenge some branches for the bridge. The 2lb axe made easy work of the maple, with ample help from our four legged friend.
Doogan had a great time tearing through the jungle with us, biting through branches and wreaking havoc. Along my route machete-ing a true trail and sawing out unruly vine maple or fallen limbs, I found some trailing blackberry stems which I pocketed for future basket making. In these next few dry days I’m going to try to make a blackberry bramble basket craft so I’m keeping reminders.
The muddy hillside above the bridge was previously a tilted tumble on an unmarked slippery hill, spotted with animal dens of some burrowing creature. Not ideal. We re-routed around some fir trees and dug a stone and wooden step into the hillside. Austin made some great wooden stakes to keep the steps in place, and staked a log along the bottom slope to help protect the trail from erosion.

Just yesterday we finished clearing a big space which had previously been overrun by blackberries. That space will hold the tipi this summer. We hope to move and create a good space for the wood-fired hot tub to be revived in the same field. This year we have big plans in mind and we are trying this year to practice patience, patience, patience.
It isn’t easy to make the easy life, but we are really working hard to make this space maximum capacity enjoyable.
So far, so good!
Till next time!
be sweet, stay wild @coyoteom

I bet you were very tired at the end of it all. The best part is the presence of results and show of progress. Keep It up soon you will have a completely enjoyable space.

We love being able to trail run on the property, this trail gives us the extra distance for a half mile loop @mutitum

It may very well be hard work, but at least it is incredibly beautiful. Hopefully you are setup and have a base very shortly. Great photo/caption series to add to the story.

We have a nice loop trail to the waterfall then down to the "beach" section of the river, but we are looking to expand our trails further upstream and then manage our land across the river-- the majority of the property lies across the bridgeless river 😨 @naquoya we call the other side 'the island' cause we can stare at it all day but its damn hard work to get there

Wonderful, sounds idyllic. Now for the task of how to get to the other side? Or does it stay a wild place for ever?

Oh we are already in the planning a bridge stage! Our spring is across the river, so we have some very basic trails but the bridge we used to have was washed out in '95 by a big flood, so we have been just crossing through the cold water any time we need to work on our water system. Hopefully a bridge will come together this summer, weve got a cedar across the way that will be the base for our bridge 😍
Theres some really beautiful huge trees and lovely flat spaces for camping/building across the river, so we definitely want easy access @naquoya

Sounds like you have it quite worked out. I love the sound of the whole experience, hard work or not. Nature can be a liberating energy to be around. Best of luck.

i love seeing your beautiful space!! there's some trail work that i need to start doing as well. it's gotta dry up here, though ... good grief. the area's got, like, mudslide & flood warnings all over the place.

spooky! mudslides freak me out! It rains so much here that trees sliding in mudslides has always been a worry of mine, hopefuly it dries out in due time and clears up for some trail-blazing at your hOMe! @twinislandflames.

Seriously @twinislandflames! Every time we go outside in our muck boots we walk to the riverside before heading back to the yurt to rinse of the thick mud we collect on our soles 😂
