First Order Of Seeds Have Arrived
Like most gardeners and homesteaders, this is the time of year when we have started planning out and plotting the area for next year's garden set up. We start scouring seed catalogs, visiting local seed stores and taking inventory of what we already have in stock.
It's a never-ending cycle; but we wouldn't have it any other way.
Included in this first order:
- Chopsuey Greens
- Great Mullein
- Basil Holy
- St John's Wort
- Angelica
- Calendula
I have earned a few Amazon gift cards over the last few months doing some things online so I have set them aside for making seed orders. Generally I like to order from Annie's Seeds and MI Gardener, but when I have free gift cards, I will order from other places. The reason I like both these online seed suppliers is: first, they are both located in Michigan (where I reside) and their selections are usually good; plus the MI Gardener offers theirs up for only .99/cents each packet.

Plans On Herb Garden Expansion
I have been dreaming of the expansion of my front herb garden for months and have been doodling and sketching some revisions in my notebook.
I have also been mulling over the idea of moving some of the landscape bricks in the front herb garden to make the area bigger. Right now, figuring in the seeds I want to plant versus the area up there, I need about another 20-30 sq ft of beds to accomplish my envisioned herb (and medicinal flower) garden.
More Containers
Since my garden space is so limited, I am also working on having more containers; whether dollar store round buckets, five-gallon buckets, one more raised container bed or taking my two extra 55-gallon pickle barrels and cutting them in half. I have some GREAT container ideas I'm imagining this coming season.
Don't you love getting goodies in the mail! As you can see, I have the sotall account set up and already working on a first post. Plus the website is operational, but the first tutorial is not complete yet. Good times are coming! Busy, busy busy!

That is awesome! We moved from NC to MO in August and my ultimate goal is to have a large garden. We bought a 10 acre farm. In October I plowed our future garden area. Turns out it is about half an acre in size. It will be a huge jump from growing in 2 separate 4'x8' raised beds.
In the beginning of December I ordered a ton of seeds from Baker Creek Seeds. Once they arrived my wife halted my excitement and told me I could not open them until Christmas morning. Talk about a bummer! Well when Christmas morning arrived I was able to open the manila envelope and out poured sixty different packets. The smile on my face stretched from ear to ear!!
Since we moved here I have been saving empty toilet paper rolls, yogurt containers and 1/2 gallon milk cartons to use them as growing containers. If February I get to finally start sowing some of the seeds indoors! I am so excited and I know my wife and children will be excited to see the new growth and then when we get to transplant and direct sow in March and April. Big steps at becoming self sustaining and reducing the cost at the grocery store!!
Thank you for sharing and I hope that we are all successful and prosperous this year with our gardens, farms and homesteads.

Baker Creek should pay me for all the free advertising I do for them! It’s a little bit of a drive, but you should look into attending their Spring Planting Festival. We live about two hours away, but I wouldn’t miss it, even if I had to walk. lol
I hope you’ll be posting the progress of your garden this year. I’ll be watching for it!

YEAH... I am so jealous of this! But one of our goals in 2018 is to find our property.. so... hopefully we will.
I have seen people who use empty TP rolls and the little coffee K-cups for seed starters! SUch great ways to reuse and not waste!
I, for one, am tired of relying on BIG companies to keep me alive. My husband can hunt, I can shoot a gun and grow a garden, then preserve the harvest.
I raised chickens, ducks and pheasants.. we can do it!

I was jealous for the longest time, dreaming of owning a farm so I can pick up the trades and skills that my Grandfather had achieved when he was alive. From farming, to gardening, to bee keeping, to making his own maple syrup and wine...it was paradise for me as a kid. When we visited the farm we could pick apples, grapes, blackberries, and all kinds of vegetables and just enjoy it all with my cousins. I want our new home to be like that. In August we got that. Now for the baby steps in making it our reality...just wish I had some maple trees to make our own syrup!
As for seed starting, I am tired of wasting money on seed trays. Granted it does not cost too much, but season after season it does add up. At least with TP it is a guarantee that we will have rolls, and enough for the spring sowing season. And yes, I am all about reusing and not tossing it into the trash. For the yogurt containers I line them with newspaper that way when its time to transplant I am not breaking the fragile roots.
Our garden is our first step at saving money. In March or April we will get a few chickens (layers and meat birds) to start out with. Then some rabbits and dairy goats. But first I need to build the infrastructure. Again, all baby steps.
I hope you find your property! We got 10 acres and I think we will be just fine with that size.
FYI, being that you said your husband hunts; when looking at properties be sure your are out in the COUNTY and not within city limits. Our farm is in the city limits, and we live next to a subdivision. Long story short, I cannot hunt my own farm. Missouri law says I can, but the city says no! I am too close to a subdivision. And this is what I am missing out on....UGH!!! The only joy we get is my girls naming all the deer. Ha Ha Ha (I am crying on the inside!!)
Have a great and blessed morning!

I haven't put my order in yet! 😕 And I'm getting anxious!😧 I know we're just in the first week of January, but I feel like I'm running out of time! Oi vey.
I'm unreasonably loyal to Baker Creek, but I think I'll check out MI Gardener. 99cents is hard to pass up. 😀

Oh this was just one order of MANY... and I mean MANY!
I do them in little quantities. Yeah, it does tend to cost more for shipping but I am so methodical and this is what works best for me.
Yeah, MI Gardener is cheaper and they have great seeds; maybe not as big of a selection, so I usually start with them first

Lol! When I "woke up" I bought heirloom seeds. LOTS of them... I am making myself use them up before I make any more big orders and having the catalogs come in is killin' me! But I am going to get some trays going, as soon as I have seedlings to fuss over my seed lust will be vanquished!

I recently bought Basil Holy seeds, the name is "tulsi" in this region. They take a lot of time to grow here. But have some medicinal benefits.
