Where Is Spring At? Indoor Grow Tent Garden Update

Spring Hasn't Sprung... Yet

As I continue nurturing, sowing and sweet talking all my plants, herbs and flowers on my kitchen gardening table or in the grow tent, I keep a close eye on the weather outside. Last Thursday, temperatures here were inching towards the 70-degree mark; but 48-hours later we were hit with a winter weather warning which resulted in an ice storm, freezing rain and eventually snow. It's amazing because on that Friday my husband said, "You should get your greenhouses up and going...". Now he sees why I didn't. He's not a gardener, so I'll excuse his words.

What's Been Happening & Growing

Sour Gherkin Cucumbers

I planted Sour Gherkins about two weeks ago and they were transplanted into Solo cups over the weekend and they are thriving in the grow tent. I have four of Gherkins right now. I plan on adding two slicing cucumber and two pickling cucumber plants and will be sowing soon.

Last year I had a slow cucumber harvest and am hoping new varieties as well as they new location will help increase my yield.

I had found the Gherkins through a local seed company and will be using them to make homemade relish, miniature bread and butter pickles and adding them to every salad and homemade salad dressing I can.

Habernero Peppers

We are a household that LOVE peppers; jalapenos, cayenne, poblano, serrano and on and on...
To date there hasn't been a pepper we haven't liked and grown. This year I am adding some more Habernero (as well as Poblano) to the garden and greenhouses. I use the cayenne peppers to make home hot sauce (hubby is an addict of Frank's Hot Sauce so I make our own for cost savings reasons). I want a milder, less heat leveled pepper for myself, so that's the reason for the pepper expansion.

Lemon Grass

I have grown lemon balm for years and this year I wanted more lemon. So I turned to lemon grass.
I use the lemon balm (dehydrated) and add to my herbal sweet teas; plus I give some to my mom for her tea. She loves the natural flavoring boost the lemon balm gives to her morning kick-start.
But the lemon grass I have other culinary plans for. I'll be adding to my stews, some soups, stir-fry meals and as a little punch to salads and salad dressings. And don't get me started on using it for BBQ season coming up soon.
Plus I can use to make homemade mosquito repellent.

Camellia Flowers

I first learned about these flowers from @fernowl13 earlier this year and was fortunate to have found some for sale.
These are an unknown color as when I bought them, they were sold as a variety pack. I am hoping for pink personally, but I'm sure I'll be pleased with whatever color grows.
I am adding quite a few different flower varieties to my herb garden this year for a few reasons.
One is for some added vibrant contrast against the green of all the herbs; and the second reason is that some of the flowers I am adding are edible.

GREAT Investment For Indoor Garden

Aside from the grow tent, this little humidity and temperature gauge has been one of the best investments I made for the indoor winter garden.
It digitally keeps track of all the humidity levels and temperature. If you ever decide to have a grow tent or indoor winter garden, I highly recommend investing in one of these. I paid about $9/USD for it and was well worth the money.

I am with you. I am so sick of this winter weather. Would like to get out and start working in my yard and wife would like to get some flowers and plants out.

I checked the 15 day forecast here this morning and it looks as if the snow is gone. Looking at temps in the upper 50s and 60s coming up... night lows in the upper 30s... so fingers crossed. My greenhouses are calling to me

Oh, I will love some good weather, with no rain or snow. Need to get some fishing in as well.

Thanks for sharing, @goldendawne ....
An informative & useful post... 😍😍

I need to get my plants outside soon! I am running out of room under my grow lights! I am hoping to get them out this week. We will see!

lol- me too! I may need to add another grow tent if this crazy weather keeps up. I know next year I am adding some wire shelves to the grow tent to allow for more space.

I have four shelves on mine, but I can only use 1 with hanging the grow lights. :( I haven't figured a way to rig it to utilize the other shelves yet. So, it's more of a timely thing. Once they can go outside I have a clear shelf for the next round...

I feel your pain. This winter has stayed way to long. I am ready for those sunny warm spring days.

What's really upsetting is that last week it was 62 and 68 degrees two days in a row.... sigh
Ma Nature giveth and she taketh away

Boy howdy the weather has been crazy this spring @goldendawne.

  • Grow tent? I must have missed that post... Going to go look now.
    Oh wow, that's cool!
    • Well, looks like you are ready for when spring finally springs!

I'm glad you found my other posts about the grow tent. It sure was a life-saver this year with winter lasting longer than normal.

Yep. I'm one of the few knuckleheads that still is sowing outdoors !@#$$#@%&... old man winter just won't hibernate...

Oh no!!!! SO sorry to hear that!

Hopefully you didn't lose too much.

lol just seed... but we now have this sunspot blasting us, went from below freezing yesterday to 90s today... wtf... this weather is so confusing...

Spring has not sprung here either! You've got a lot of lovely varieties there. Sour Gherkins sound delicious.

I know!!! I am about to give Ma Nature a piece of my mind.
I looked back at my pictures and last year I had the greenhouse up April 1 and had started adding herbs on April 3.... ummmm, yeah a little late this year.

There is hope! It is sunny and the snow is FINALLY starting to melt here! We still have our snow base from December on the ground, it has been a long winter! I'll try to send some of this sunshine your way once we're done with it here :)

Oh I know... Please share the sunshine!!! I need it or I'll start suffering from prolonged winter anxiety here

Lemon grass is mosquito repellent. I did not know that. You will have to share the recipe. I use citronella spray but I bet the lemon grass one smells better:)

Yes I found quite a few homemade recipes online using lemon grass in mosquito repellent so I am kind of excited to try it. We have woods about 50 feet from our backdoor and a creek behind the woods so mosquitoes are prevalent here.

I feel you on this winter weather, how many shadows did the groundhog see this year anyhow? I have so much out door work to get done but an inch of ice in the way lol

I think he saw it too many times. Last year at this time I already had my greenhouse up and filled with herbs. At this rate I'll be picking tomatoes in November; right before the next winter snow season starts

I truly miss living in the village, I guess I can only dream those things in the town or build some sort of a window-garden in our apartment.

I have limited gardening space; hence the two greenhouses. SO I am very strategic with my gardening plans

I hoping spring comes soon!! Here in North Iowa we are looking at 8 inches of snow and its not done yet! image
