As I said in my previous Walk with Me post, my husband just brought home the newest addition to our little, growing homestead!

Everyone, meet Meatloaf!

Meatloaf is 500 pound, white-faced, Hereford cross breed steer. The husband acquired him just yesterday from a local livestock auction. We paid only $230 for this guy!

Meatloaf will be fed and fattened up until about mid June, when he goes to the processing place in Summersville to be turned into many, many delicious things!

One of the things I like the most about getting our food this way is that I know what I've fed them and I know how clean their living conditions are and basically I know if the animal had a good life or not. I know we will give Meatloaf the best care we can while he is here and in return we will get the best meat we can! Happy steers are yummy steaks.

So that's the big announcement! I love having new members of the homestead, even if he's just here for a few months. He's a cutie and he doesn't run off when I approach the fence. He's going to be one happy cow.

Thanks for stopping by! What does your family raise for meat? Do you have any cows? Or a cow, like us? Tell me all about it!

So jealous I'd love a cow, well a milk cow. I'm assuming 'meatloaf' has another future ;)

Oh yeah. You wouldn't want to try to milk this one. You might get something else. Hahaha! He is a steer so he's castrated though. Meatloaf will eventually be....meatloaf!

“Happy steers are yummy steaks”! I love that! :)

Is Meatloaf your first steer? Or did raise Brisket and T-bone in earlier years? ; ) Enjoy your beef-on-the-hoof!

He's our first to raise for this long. We've gotten cows from auctions before and simply taken them straight to the processor. This time we got a younger one. My husband said we couldn't give him a "real" name since we are going to eat him. Haha!

Hi Meatloaf!!! You look delicious!!! ♥

Meatloaf...lol he is a brute!

So this is what Sean was up to!!! I love how you will get to control the food your steer eats and how he is raised until his slaughter. Good eats for sure! I was also wondering if you might have some nice "bull shit" photos to share in the future?? (haha)
