#growwithme, Sowing and Sprouting Seeds

in homesteading •  7 years ago

We've got sprouting happening here!

The broccoli and cauliflower seeds are busting out and reaching for the light.

We sowed these seeds, along with a tray of walla walla onions on Feb 12. No signs of life from the onion tray yet, they can take up to 2 weeks to germinate.

I've had some great help from my little boy Ash.

Here he is helping me mix up some seed starting mix with some worm castings.

These two worms were tied in knots! My guess is that they were mating, and got a little carried away? When worms mate they align their bodies and exchange sperm, then each of them excretes a "cocoon" that 1-20 baby worms hatch from.

They came apart okay after I distrubed them... Sorry!

The calendula is sprouting, though a few seedlings succumbed to "damping off", no biggie, I'll plant more!

We also sowed a flat of asparagus and a flat of leeks, first time growing either of these so please drop any tips in the comments! I know I won't have asparagus to eat for about three years...

We're having fun! And there's so much more to sow :) I'm really glad my excitement about gardening is spreading to my wee one.

I’ve been gardening for a couple years now but I have never grown from seed! I always buy the seedlings because I’m afraid of my black thumb killing them! Your post has inspired me... maybe i should take the plunge this year! Even if it just helps me with the fact that it’s still the depths of winter where I live, it’s like a living reminder that spring is coming!

You can do it! It's so fun and satisfying :) You need to figure out timing and spacing and lights and stuff, but it'll all come to you through trial and error. And if you mess up, just try again, or buy some seedlings :)
I feel you, its still winter here too. Soon enough though... Spring will come!

I love that feeling when you get up in the morning and see your first sprouts! Good work, it is nice to see your kid learning and helping :)

It's so good :)
I'm happy he's digging it too, my eldest doesn't really like getting his hands dirty. Maybe if I had started gardening when he was younger...

That's so cool. Your little one looks really happy to be helping Momma with such an important task. Thanks so much for sharing!

I'm happy you enjoyed! This is the kind of thing that really brings me joy so I like to share :)

Haha funny how you crashed the worm orgy XD

It's lovely you're sharing these skills (and fun sessions) with your lovely Ash.

Thanks for sharing. Great pics.

Cheers
Anji x

Yeah I really disturbed them, poor worms, haha

OMG love thisss with lil babyyy tooo .. so much love in this entire series .. tears... xx Eagle

Isnt he cute <3<3<3

so very cute!!

Awee, its so fun to garden with kiddos. I always try to plant extra tho because they like to eat all my peas the little ones do lol.

My onions are just starting now, and kale and salad greens. I dont think I could plant brocolli yet, what zone are you in?

I'm in zone 6 :) They are really early but I'm planning on transfering them to the greenhouse a few weeks before last frost. Havent done it this way before, we'll see how she goes!

Ahh I am zone 4, and I have no greenhouse yet sadly. My broccoli has to wait, which is sad, because I want to eat it!
Instead of growing things the sky just dumped literally 2 more feet of snow, FML!

We woke up to lots of snow too :(
Ah well. Spring will come soon enough!

Looking good Amy! Beautiful babies growing there:) I lost a couple of rhubarb to damping off as well. Over zealous with the watering I guess haha! Break out the cinnamon!! <3 <3 <3 xo

Oh no! Not the rhubarbs! These had cinnamon on them already, still didn't make it. Oh wellll.

how did you do it.

I will post a step by step seed into dirt post just for you another day :)

Great post nice pictures keep up the good work 👏 I'm following you now

Thanks, glad you enjoyed!

My pleasure 👍

I hope my kids in future enjoy gardening with me just like this. so sweet :)

I hope they do too xoxo :)

excellent, I love broccoli, and it is super healthy, I published recently my mint plants and everything that can help us, I invite you to see it suddenly you are interested. nature saves us and heals us !!!

I wrote about mint a while back too, I am all about the power of plants!
Glad you enjoyed :)

I had asparagus within 2 years. But I think because of our colder climate they tend to thrive.

Huh! Well I hope that's the case here too!

You're a great mom Amy! You always find time to spend with your baby. :) Love the worms they're having valentines date as well. ^^

Thanks Dawn <3
Hahaha wormy date xD

welcome to the light, little seedlings! <3

<3

This is a lovely post. I would like to have time to do this but until the time that I get home I am too tired to actually do anything. I appreciate what you do! Cheers!

Thank you @alexdory! I am very fortunate to be able to the work I do here in my home, when I had a 9-5 I wasn't able to do this.
I am so lucky to be able to pursue this passion and share it with my wee one, and with you all through Steemit!
Take care,

Thank you again!

Thank you Bobby! I remember reading this, I will read it again asap. Is it in the ho knowledge base?

Love it... Its so important that kids get their hands dirty, learn about these things you know, not to be afraid of bugs and to not live with an ipad on their laps all the time.

I think the wormies were doing just that... they are not female and male, they play on both sides of the net sort of speak. So technically they both got pregnant!! ha!!

I agree <3
While my kiddos do love watching movies (as do their momma and daddy) I try to find balance with the outdoors and creative play too :)

I haven't started planting any seeds yet, it's much too early for me to start where I live. I won't start planting seeds until April.

I probably shouldn't...but I'm not starting too too many, it will be a long time before I can put them outside still, though I am going to experiment with early growing under cover this year :)

It's good to let the kids try gardening!

I agree, its great :)

Brocolli? Blharg! Give me the earthworms any day of the week!

You like spinach but not broccoli? You crazy mang!
Freshly picked broccoli is really good, sweet and tender <3

Spinach is good, not broccolli.
Blharg

Beautiful post, I have been waiting for this moment that it becomes warmer here in Vienna.... will soon sow seeds even if its means on the window sills. Thanks for sharing your dirty hands... LOL! Cheers

My pleasure! I know the feeling of not being able to wait, its quite early to be sowing here but I just couldn't help it!

Cute sprouts! I was kind of worried those worms would be stuck forever haha, but looks like they got out.

Also, dirt looks nice and healthy. Opal eats dirt sometimes if we're not careful.

I used to have a shirt that said "dirt makes you grow", I love dirt! I make sure to eat a little too, on freshly pulled carrots and things, haha

You are killing me! I want to grow so bad!!! Im not ready yet lol. Ya asparagus is something I want to try as well, we eat a lot of it. I did not know that it takes 3 yrs to get something from it. So sad. I like the veggies that give something the season of. Oh well gonna grow some anyways. I am just impatient lol. Happy growing :)

If you're impatient you can buy the corms and plant them, you'll get something the next year that way :) As a perennial you'll get more and more as the years go by!!

Yep, I have already planned that whatever I don't have the time to grow from seed myself, I will go buy it already growing. There are many things that I want this year but I don't think I have the capacity to start it all myself. Not with the little knowledge I have anyways.

Wormy date indeed. ^^

Beautiful post! Love that little helper of yours!
