Building PVC Pipe Towers for Gardening

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

Today we got to help out a local ministry by building PVC pipe garden towers. It was a lot of fun and pretty easy to do. They are hoping to fill a greenhouse on their property with these and provide food for needy people in the community. Check out how we made them!

When we had arrived, they had already cut the pipes into the necessary length and done the marks at the necessary intervals. Each pipe has 10 slots on 4 sides. They will hold little buckets that will contain the plant and allow the roots to reach the center of the tower.

We then put them on the specially built table and used the heat gun at each slot to heat up the pipe. They had already made a little wedge to go into the slot once it was heated up. I worked with my friend part of the time. I would heat it up and she would put the wedge in and hold it in place while cooling the pipe with a wet cloth.

They hope to finish 44 of them on this trip and each one takes about one hour to complete. We were able to help them finish 6 of them in the two hours we were there. The men were working on a different project.

They will attach a pipe to the bottom of these and hook them up in the greenhouse. I think they plan to end up with 144 in the end which is a pretty massive undertaking! I know the community will appreciate the fresh produce they will be able to provide!

While we were out there, they even took the kids around the farm and entertained them the whole time! It was nice so we could work without them getting into trouble or being under foot. They collected pinecones, eggs from the chickens, talked about gardening, planted some seeds, and many other activities!

If you're interested in making a garden tower, it was pretty easy with the right tools. I found this handy YouTube video that explains the process pretty well, if you're interested.

I can't wait to visit again and keep you guys updated on the progress at the farm! I just know it's going to be pretty amazing when they have all of the towers up with produce growing in them!

That seems like a good method to use to make an herb garden in a small space. Just one or two could grow more herbs than one home could use. I might have to try it.

Yes I agree about the herbs! It's a great idea - 40 plants on one tower! Wow!

This is an interesting project. What type of veggies are the planning to grow?

I asked the same thing. They said herbs, lettuce, strawberries, squash...pretty much everything (except potatoes because I asked about that too Ha). They're going to do a few test crops and see what works best and then go from there.

That looks like one heck of a project. That's a pretty big greenhouse, there... wow. I like the idea of the garden towers. They look like they would be a nice option for an indoor herb garden, actually.

Yes, they would be great for herbs and you could do any size I'm guessing. I don't really understand how they're all going to be hooked up... It is a huge greenhouse. That's only half of it pictured.

Wow! I love the idea of making use of vertical space! Very cool! We finally are having some warmer weather so I seriously need to start working on gardening, although there is still a serious possibility of having some freezing temps, so I'm nervous.

And is that a new logo? Very cute!

Yes, it is going to be huge! Man, so crazy that you have a possibility of freezing temps still!! Wow!! Yep, that's the new logo - glad you like it. :)

Thanks so much! :)

Looks like a pretty slick process for creating these planters, might suggest a coat of paint on those planters. The sunlight will break down the PVC and make them brittle in a matter of a few years, painted will stop the UV and then they will last as long as you keep paint on them.
That is a really nice green house too.
Thanks for showing us whats happening in your world.

Yes, the greenhouse is really nice - mesh siding to let the winds blow through, plastic top, metal frame. Good idea about painting them. I'll pass the word along.

Im gonna do Potatoes within used car wheels, you should try too.
put 5 (one over another) fill them with earth and when you are done they only need a few hits to take them out and try some more.

Nice - that sounds like a good idea. The farm today was telling me we should grow sweet potatoes in a barrel. We had tried in the ground, but perhaps we didn't break up the soil enough for them to grown down or something...

Let me now if it works for You , I hope it will be a success:)

What a great idea. Lots of fresh produce will be wonderful for the community. Blessings in your work. 🙏

Thank you! I loved the idea as well. I'm glad we were able to help out today. Hoping to return this week and help out some more. :)

@apanamamama! Are you guys ever not having fun down there?! This is awesome and a surefire way to get my to-do list filled up by the wife. I am going to have to hide this post from her for a bit, otherwise I expect to find "Make 35 garden towers" as part of my responsibilities for the next week.

Seriously though, what a great idea to help a great cause! Keep up the phenomenal work and fun down there!

You'll have to check out my post tomorrow to see what fun we had today. ;) Well, my husband had some fun while I babysit some kids. :) Did you show them to your wife? I bet she'll like this and add it to the list. I want to make some as well for our house! :)

wow @apanamamama thank you for sharing the youtube! From the video it looks easy maybe he is the expert. But one pipe can hold up to 44 mini bucket really not an easy task. I'm curious what kind of plant we could plant in the such a small bucket? some veggie?

Yes, they plan to do lettuce, herbs, squash, strawberries and more. They hope to do some test crops and see how everything turns out. It's pretty amazing sounding!

wow, strawberries in a small bucket, interesting! Maybe plant some vegetable that regrow themselves so that it will be lesser maintenance needed!

Thank you so much! That's really great and I appreciate you letting me know and including this post. :)

Thank you!! :)

That's great! I'm really impressed by the speed at which you were able to finish them. I've built a slightly different version recently and it took me way longer to get the holes done, heh :D

Oh no - not good if it took way longer. They said they researched for a long time what to do - watched tons of youtube videos. I just followed what they told me to do. ;)

Heh, I drilled with a holesaw; the plastic was thicker and after each cut I had to manually remove the piece that was stuck in the saw; that took longer than drilling so that's why it took me way longer :D
