This girl is breaking my heart. Yesterday 3 of her adopted guinea fowl keets flew over the fence. Miraculously they survived the night despite the heavy rain and two resident foxes. This morning they were waiting to be let back into the pen and rejoined their family.
All morning the poor mother hen has stood looking through the fence, listening out for any movement or noise, only leaving occasionally to tend the 'others' How do I explain to her that she has all 13 of her keets. Bless her, motherhood has taken it's toll on her, the keets are as big as she is now and she has also started to moult. She has been such an amazing mum

Wow, what a lucky one you are to have such a fabulous bird. I'm had good broody hens but nothing on this level! I'd treasure that one for sure.

I love my broody hens. They are so devoted. Each and everyone of them earns their place in the flock and retire to the paddock once they become old.My oldest and best is an Indian Game who's coming up for 10 years. She has hatch and mothered so many chicks including turkeys

Hello Belle
It is not so ease to catch them, I think.

Poor Mama. She never learned to count. Haha! That's a cute video, by the way. I love how they follow her around.

I'm usually quite pleased hens can't count as it makes fostering easier but in this case I wish she could She has been an amazing mother and the guinea fowl keets are great.

They always look so pitiful when they molt and after they have gone broody and are at the end of the whole cycle...A great mom is worth so much in so many ways! For people and chickens. :)
Happy night!

She is still mothering them? Mine did for maybe 8 weeks. And then, they were done!!
Chicken moms are amazing. They really sacrifice for their kids. Oh well, human moms do too.

She's an amazing mum .The Guinea Fowl chicks are only 6 weeks though so I guess despite their size she's still committed. They are beginning to become more independent though. Some mother hens I have tire after 3 -4 weeks.

Now, 3 to 4 weeks seems a bit early....

It's not ideal but as long as the chicks are well feathered and the weather is good they are usually OK. If the mother is adamant she is no longer interested and I feel they need extra care they go in the brooder shed for a couple more weeks.
