1st Time Processing Rabbit | How I Feel AftersteemCreated with Sketch.

in homesteading •  8 years ago

Hi everyone, I'm Beau!

I am new. I am new here on Steemit, and I am new here in the homesteading community. I actually still call myself a "wannabe homesteader" as we haven't moved onto our 7acres in central Texas. Still living in suburbia.

But with the birth of our 4th child last month...I am not letting anything slow me down from my goal of learning new skills and every day taking one step closer to our homestead property!

This is me sharing my brain dump after the first time I have EVER taken an animals life. It was humbling. It was hard. And it made me feel very grateful for the life of these animals and for the food for my family!!

We used two methods for "the kill". I visited my rabbit mentor's place and she taught me. She uses a CO2 powered BB gun and the broom stick method with a stick of rebar.

I feel terrible y'all. I watched her put down the first rabbit and it went perfect. When it was my turn...the first shot didn't work. The 2nd shot didn't work. Then she took over and did cervical dislocation. I felt like a failure and I horrible person.

There on out I did cervical dislocation and I highly preferred it. I learned A LOT!! It truly was a big big day for me. I want to learn better animal husbandry and how to grow and raise as much of our own food as I can.

Please let me know if you have any advise. Please don't bash me if I completely messed up. I really want to learn and get better.

Thank you all!!

-Beau

First, welcome to steemit! I agree that the butchering is one of the hardest parts of the whole process. Overtime, you will get faster and better at it. Best of luck on the continued homesteading!

Thank you very much!! I certainly need all of the luck I can get. Haha. Thank you for commenting! Or "replying". Still learning Steemit! Lol
