Just a Boy and His Chicks!!!

The other day my son picked up seven more chickens to add to his growing flock. I am so proud of him. He is turning into a great businessman. He waited until the chicks went on sale at the local feed store. He has figured out that every few weeks they order more chicks and any chicks that they have left over from the previous order they put on sale.

These chicks are starting to get their feathers and are not near as cute and cuddly looking as the new born chicks. He told me dad, these chicks are older and they are cheaper. It is a great deal to buy them because I do not have to feed them for the first few weeks and they usually live and not die. He picked out white egg layers this time, as we have brown and blue eggs now. This will complete his color scheme for eggs. What a good business mind he is developing.

While these chicks are young he keeps them in our mud room with a heat lamp on them. He has made a great pen for them out of an old cattle protein tub. He is out there all the time holding them and checking on them.

It is great to see your children learning and succeeding at the adventures they take on. This is just another reason I love our life here on the homestead.

Thats so great! I love chickens. I am under the belief..the more chickens the better!

My son absolutely loves them.

Raising chicks is such a great job for kids! They get to learn the basics of food production and taking care of chickens. My little nephew will sit next to the coop for a couple of hours at a time just looking at them.

I agree it teaches them so many life lessons.

@bowentroyer Very smart! I remember when our kids first brought their chicks home. They would spend hours after school holding them and that continued when they were fully grown. You would often see our youngest boy walking around with his hen tucked under his arm... he was only 4 at the time :)

That is exactly how my son is. We call him the chicken whisperer. Thank you for the comment and stopping by

I love to see the little ones into chicks. I have always kept chicks, since I was very young. I currently have a few I've hatched myself and some quail chicks I also hatched. I love this time of year, thinking about Spring!

I am glad that he is taking an interest. He says he doesn't want to be a farmer but he will always have chickens.

He’s smart! Must be learning by working alongside his dad.

He gets it from his mom;)

thats really cool im impressed at his mature thinking! good on him you must be proud :)

very proud. thank you for the comment.

Entrepreneurship is a great thing to learn at a early age! Excellent job!

I love young minds who think outside the box and learn ways to make a buck. Ya'll are good parents! Raise them up right!

Teach them young! Is he selling eggs for a business?

Yes it is his little business.

There is nothing better for kids than to learn to manage a business at an early age! Great job!

Smart boy!

Getting them started early!

You're having a good time. Wanted to see how he lives a simple American farmer. Godspeed!
