Our first year on the farm 5 years ago we had a plague of flies. They were everywhere and in everything. We could not believe how many flies were around. We talked to a few neighbors and they recommended chemical treatments for the flies. They all used pour-on chemical insect repellents on their cattle or chemical fly traps to kill the flies. We do our best to be chemical and pesticide free here on our farm so we were not excited about using either of those options to control the flying insect population.
Our natural solution was to build 150 blue bird and swallow boxes.
That first winter here on the farm we spent many hours crafting these boxes. We were not fully sure they would work or not. From research we discovered that each swallow ate around 850 flying insects a day. We figured if they eat that many flies the population has to go down. That first year out about 60 percent of our bird boxes got used by the swallows and blue birds. They next year the percentage was up to around 85 percent. We added 50 more boxes this past year and have never regretted it.
Each year now we have more and more beautiful birds flying around and less and less flies. We have not eliminated all the flies but there is no comparison to the first year when we were here on the farm. It has been a total transformation around here with flying insects. They are much fewer and farther between.
We love finding natural ways to solve problems around here. Without using any chemicals and no pour-ons for our cattle we have solved a major problem with these bird boxes. They are easy and fun to make. This is the basic plan that we used.
Thank you for reading and following along. I hope if you have a fly problem on your farm or homestead you can look into making some bird boxes and naturally solving your problem.

love the idea of your bird boxes. Any natural way that we can solve a pest problem the better. Ten years ago I planted several hundred superior grafted walnut, cherry, and popular trees and there were several problems to deal with. First there were the vohels. Rather than poison I set live traps which works great. The next problem were the White Tail Deer eating the new growth every spring. A sure fire method for this problem was spraying an egg/milk solution on the new growth. This remedy works for any vegetation that the deer may browse on. The ratio for the mixture is 1 gallon of milk for 2 dozen eggs. Just mix with a blender, put into a spray bottle, and spray away. If you are only going to spray a few plants you can mix 6 eggs to a quart of milk. This will give you around 32 oz. of solution for about $2.00. The application of this mixture will protect your plants for months.

Great ideas. I agree. There usually is a natural way to solve most problems.

I wonder if they would help. Pigs will eat anything so maybe they would eat up the flies' food? From personal experience flies are similar to ants. I never have ants around unless there is food for them.

We've put up a few bluebird boxes, but we are just a tiny farm. We also have a 105' x 30' bat house. AKA our barn. We have little brown bats that have survived the white nose disease that come back each year. They are our main bug control.
For fly control we've used Jerry Brunetti's Fly Be Gone with great success. It is merely a precise mix of minerals, that's all. We figure whatever the cows don't utilize will be re-mineralizing the soil, so it's a win-win-win situation.

We have fruit bats that fly all over our trees here and eat up a lot of bugs and also smaller shreech owls. These really decimate the bug population here along with we have thousands of little green anole lizard that during the day are all over the place eating bugs. I am going to check out the fly be gone also though since we do get a few flies on our cattle in the padlocks. Thanks for the info.

Muscovy ducks are also a great element for your IPM, plus their eggs are tasty.

Around this area, it was always Purple Martin's that everyone wanted. Is that a thing in your area as well? I guess people used to comment they were good for eating mosquitos so perhaps blue birds and sparrows are better for flies?

We do not have many purple martins around here. I wish we did. Yes the blue birds and swallows are great for eating flies.

We have bird boxes and bat boxes! Anything that will insects are welcome. We have Guinea fowl too to clean-up ticks. We use no chemicals on the homestead. There is always another solution to the pests.
