I Harvested A Huge Malanga

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

Malanga is one of the staple foods on my homestead. This particular one is the largest Malanga I have ever harvested. It has grown for one year from a golf ball size to 4 lbs or 1.8 kilograms.

They are very easy to grow. I can simply plant them, walk away, and come back to harvest them one year later. After one year, 10-30 smaller corms will grow from the original one. Each corm can become another plant if I don't eat them all. :)

They like to grow in wet soil and can thrive in shady places. Therefore, they are ideal food plant for the herbaceous layer in a shady and low-lying area in a food forest.

Thank You!

That is wild looking! What does it taste like?

It has a unique nutty flavor which I enjoy over sweet potato and potato. The texture is more like sweet potato. Its culinary use is very versatile and can be made into ice cream, cake, soup, chips, and many other dishes.

Just googled it.
Wow!!
Wish i had a subtropical environment to grow it.
I think we had elephant ear plants in our house growing up. Do you eat the leaves? They said the young leaves are like spinach cooked.

Many elephant ears are poisonous so will need to be careful. I bought edible malanga corms from grocery stores initially just to be sure.

I don't know if they can be grown in a greenhouse?

Yes, we have tried eating the leaves. However, there are just so many other different greens we can eat so we simply not harvest the young leaves and let them use that energy to grow the corm.

Thank you for stopping by. It's very nice to hear from you :)

I am zone 2a. I suspect i am out of luck!
Where I live, they just heard of quinoa!
I suspect malanga would throw them into a tail spin!! Lol
Love the cool foods you grow!
