Hey everyone, I can't brag about been totally off grid yet but this sure helps. Just last night our power went off again and it is so nice to not have to run for candles a torch, lighter etc. Simply walk to the wall hit a switch and carry on regardless.
I did a post a few days ago below on this simple yet effective solar setup that I have installed at my house DIY! This is 'PART 2"
Here below we have the charge controller battery and timer that I installed in a custom home made DIY camouflaged unit I attached to the local tree outside! Nice thing about this is you literally cant see it from a few paces back, talk about keeping in touch with nature!
I made this box with a hinged door for easy access containing all the necessary electrical essentials, I used 10mm Plywood and sprayed it green, black and brown to blend in with the natural surrounds, as well as put a lock on to deal with 'sticky fingers' ;)
A couple toggle switches and some simple circuitry to switch between the timer and the solar controller. Also I have two batteries in this unit in the event one fails, does not charge fully on an overcast day etc. Pretty much covered all bases here eh!
A close up of the timer which I used to use much more than now. Many settings and rather versatile you can literally program it to go on and off 24 times a day to give the effect of someone been home if you wish. These days I just leave the lights pretty much on permanently at night in the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom light on and off as needed, all independent toggle switches attached!
On the roof so small you can barely see it a 20watt solar panel which runs the whole system this panel cost me around R350 3 years back equivalent to around $25 bargain!
Zoomed into the charge controller this unit is a 20 amp unit so can take much bigger panels also easily programmable. This particular screen is showing battery vital statistics, in this shot full charged and treacle charging currently!
Not the prettiest installation, but effective. This is my backup bathroom light which I leave on all night every night, Nothing quiet says 'FREE POWER' like Solar!
This system is small and effective however it has its drawbacks, what about cooking you may ask if we have power outs for extended periods of time I really do enjoy my dinner and no ways I will be forgoing that. Problem? No Problem, Gas sorts that out with ease and simplicity.
I shall be posting a quick video later on the unit I made and installed next to my bed.
Have a super, sustainable and legendary evening.
Cheer$;)
Nice, I need some solar power in my life
Is the box water proof? Looks like some rain might get in there

Been using gas exlusively for cooking since 2009. Means ESKOMFAIL is never a problem in terms of cooking. It’s way better to cook on anyway. I can’t actually believe people use electric stoves.. 🧐
I’ll never go back
