Carrots and other root crops are usually kept in the basement. I am a greedy gardener and I usually grow much more carrots than I can process before the summer ends. Since I do not have any basement, I have to look for other ways of storing vegetables. In this article, I will share two secrets that allow keeping carrots fresh until the very late spring.
Instruction
•The first method, the simplest one. Do not dig up your carrots in autumn, just leave it in the ground. With start of colds exclude copious watering. Cover the carrots with some leaves, straw or sawdust. As necessary, dig up a few roots. The insulating layer will allow the carrots to stay fresh even after frost and snowfall but if it finally freezes - then carrots will not last long.
In spring, remove what is left in the ground, and mulch the soil with the materials used for insulation.

•The second method. Fill the bucket or box with wet sand. Dig out the carrots. Do not wash it - just lightly shake it off from the ground. Cut the greenery and move the vegetables in the sand. Instead of sand, you can use moistened sawdust. Keep a bucket or box in a cool room (for example, in a garage) at 0 degrees. For long-term storage, it is necessary to withstand a temperature regime of 0-4 degrees. This method allows you to keep carrots fresh up to 6 months.

Personally I prefer second method with sand - its easy, cheap and natural.
