Avia has been saving seeds from fruits.
In the back ground of the picture, are cuttings from rosemary. They seem to have lasted the winter. :) Hoping to propagate more cuttings this year.
It started with me having to save every seed from the apples that we eat. Then the avocado pit, now we are saving peach pits.
At first I was very nonchalant about it. Watching her seed collection grow into baby food jars full of seed. She is very persistent.
So today we did some research, and we will be planting them this spring. Normally they would be planted in the fall. Like they would naturally off the tree. So we will be putting them outside for now, protected, for the last of the winter. Growing things in zone 2 can be tricky, but it's worth a try. Often our kids know more than we think.
Another great adventure! The thought of our own fruit in a few years is exciting!
How are your gardens coming along?
This week is planting week. I have put it off for too many weeks now. Now I am down to the crunch. I have planted grape seeds this year. They are taking some time to germinate but I hope it will go well. I am also planting Medjool dates. They are super good for you. A woman told me for longevity eat one a day. I work hard to follow this rule. I forget many days. I am trying rhodiola I am having a hard time getting them started, I hope it goes well.

I am so far behind with my seeds this year. Winter seems to have a grip on my motivation! I never thought of grape seeds. will they be in the greenhouse? or do you have a grape that grows zone2? How nice to have grapes!! The dates need the greenhouse I suspect? we like dates as a sugar substitute! I want to try your date ball recipe soon! Are they hard to grow from seed/pit?
i will have to google rhodiola Something new to learn!!! Sounds like you have a very busy year up and coming!!

I sure hope you are getting some sunshine now. We have finally gotten some sun and now we have water everywhere. There is always something. The grapes will be in the atrium of the house. It is like a greenhouse in front of the house. We have grapes for this zone. I could send you some seeds.
I think that the dates will need to be babied for a couple of years. They are a special type of date they really are not sweet. However planting some of the other dates for the sugar substitute would be great. I will let you know how the growing of the seeds go. I am in the beginning stages and they just can't be planted like regular seeds.
This year is busy but as you know all years are. Always more to do than we have time for.

I suspect we are heading to flooding next week. Its going to melt extremely fast. I will be landlocked for about 2 weeks or more. :)
I love that you are growing these things. :) I have been trying to grow things that will grow naturally in this zone. I talk with alot of vegans that are eating avacados, coconuts, exotic fruits....but the issue with that is availability and expense, in the next few years. How awesome that you are able to grow these foods!!
I love earth-ship principles. :)
I would love seeds. I can also send seed of things I have here. I think they are always great to have!
Its funny...i made my list of summer to do, and then I made the practical list of summer to do. LOL

We are in the melt for this moment. Rob says that we are due for another snowfall here in the next day or two. The low temperatures slow the melt down a bit at least.
Wow to be landlocked for 2 weeks or more. You really need to have your supplies and be ready for that. That takes some great planning. Hats off to you. However there might be some advantage to that. You can get things done without interruption.
The earthship is nice to be able to grow exotic things in it. I do feel that we need to eat according to our environment around us. The exotic things are a nice treat but you are right they are very expensive.
I will send some seeds over to you. Hopefully you can get them to germinate. They do take awhile. I am still waiting for mine to germinate. Patience is the name of the game.
So you made a I would love to do list and then you made a pratical list. I do this all the time. I await the day when the two lists can be one. Come on Steemit.

i have been saving tires, I am thinking that a small earthship principle greenhouse is in my future! It would certainly be nice to have.
I am excited to see what grow for you!! I am still amazed and thrilled you have PINEAPPLE!!! I know that the Potters, in the bancroft earthship, have figs. they love growing them. One day!!! as you say, COME ON STEEM!! LOL

I do find the earthship is a great building. I wouldn't trade it that is for sure. Pounding the tires was loads of work. I am glad we did it when we were younger. It would take us longer these days. However if there is no deadline then you could work away at it bit by bit.
I am hoping that my pineapple are in their second year. If I am right we will get two beautiful pineapples this fall. I will document them. The flowers are beautiful.
Where is bancroft? They grow figs that is a great idea.

It will be bit by bit... might be my retirement home...lol
Bancroft build, by the Potter's. First in Ontario, many years ago. They broke the barriers. Pioneers. They worked through alot of issues, there is a little community happening there now.
Looking forward to the pineapple documentary!

I really like how she plans ahead, saves her seeds for growing the fruit. She totally gets it. My kids would have lost those seeds. Even myself, the only seed I wanted to collect and tried growing were the seeds off a hamburger bun from McDonald's so many years ago.
I am excited to know what comes out of it ^_^ Well fruit I know but.. ya you get it lol,

The world needs more cultivators of life! I have found some wild heirloom apples that are the best i have ever tasted and I hope to propagate them. From what I have been able to figure out so far, apple seeds often need at least 3 months of freezing to germinate properly, so i keep mine in the freezer. Seeds carry the DNA of the mother tree- roots, trunk, branches, immune system- while cuttings of the branch will yield true-to-type fruit. In other words, selecting for fruit involves cutting and grafting because the seed has too many fathers to produce predictable fruit. God bless your endeavors!

I remember my grandma having a quince tree. Old and gnarled...made the best jam. Now, no one even knows what a quince tree is. We are working on the 6 month of winter, so that is our freezer! :) It would be my hope tat if these guys grow, they will make great grafting trees. I was reading about an older fella in northern Quebec that did that. You never know what will happen!! That's part of the fun!
