Sheep shearing adventure at @tanglebranch acres in Saskatchewan Canada.

So I was asked if I could lend a hand shearing sheep last Saturday. I thought why not, I haven't been out to the farm for awhile now.
Saturday started with some fresh snow and cold temps, -23° celsius. Who heads out for a 2 hour drive in these conditions on their day off? This is not normal.

Steem is following me everywhere I go from my truck's rear window.

@tanglebranch acres is a whole 2 hour drive through the open prairie from Saskatoon. Driving conditions were not the best with this fresh snow, not too bad though-I can still see some of the road.

20180203_093801.jpg

20180203_105848.jpg

Uh oh I can't see much of the highway anymore. I could still be in my warm bed. This is not normal.

20180203_095119.jpg

Where did the road go!?

20180203_095057.jpg

Well after 2 hours of listening to the last weeks political highlights on CBC it is time for work.

Here they are, most of @tanglebranch's flock. You may be wondering why we are sharing when it is so cold, well most of these sheep are pregnant and if they feel too comfortable in their warm wool they may give birth in a cold field where their babies might freeze. So if they have less wool they are likely to go in the barn to lamb and the babies will be warm enough.

20180203_134007.jpg

I had the most important to job, grabbing the tummy hair / wool and throwing into the discard pile. It is the least desirable woll of the animal because they lay in it a lot and it is shorter and also may be contaminated with other lamb bits(poop!).

Here is @tanglebranch showing a lamb who is boss.

20180204_130635.jpg

Did I mention how cold it was? This is not normal!

20180204_205830.jpg

Who's number one? I am!

20180204_205740.jpg

The very first one sheared wants back in with the crowd. "Hey guys don't go in the chute, ewe won't believe what's going to happen to ewe"

20180204_205805.jpg

Now that everyone is trimmed up they can have a little snack and get back to normal-whatever that is.

20180203_164306.jpg

This machine is actually a trailer that can be pulled behind a truck. It holds a large burlap sack(see below) that gets all of the wool stuffed into it with a piston to really cram it full.

20180204_205715.jpg

There are about 50 animals wool jammed into this sack. It's very heavy. Once a year a truck makes it around to collect these, I don't know what happens after that. Maybe they make pillows to have pillow fights!

20180204_130612.jpg

Now the chores are all finished and the kids have all had piggy back rides on uncle Eddie it's time for the 2 hour journey home. Great, it has only gotten colder during the day. This is not normal.

20180204_205542.jpg

Well at least Randy Bachman is playing the Allman Brothers and CCR on AM radio.

Loving this....super interesting the entire process and how people are homesteading. I have never shorn a sheep or seen on given a haircut, though I do have a friend with an Alpaca farm. Anyways, stellar

Oh Alpacas must be fun, are they for meat? Have you tried riding one yet?

meat? oh hell no...some are rescues on some lovely land and get sheared and they are too small to ride, it would injure them, they are very very sensitive creatures.....my friend has a lot of Organic foods growing , some free roaming chickens, some horses, think a donkey? who knows ....but they are not eaten, used in Peru Andes mostly as pack animals, that's all I know about the lovely Alpaca,

You Ewe crack me up with the "this is not normal" comments @@@edthecanadian I never knew pregnant ewes would just "stop-and-drop" a baby lamb anywhere if they're too "wooly", but it makes sense. You're a jack of all trades! Great post🐏✂️🐑

Ha funny sheep and shear emoj's. I'm glad you liked it nina.

Yeah, I like it alright. Been humming "Baa, baa black sheep have you any wool" all morning! I've always related to being the black sheep in the family @edthecanadian

Awesome captures to detailing...enjoyed it thoroughly...virtually !!! LOL

Cheers!

Nice to see sheep being sheared and it is just sheep being sheared, not politics... lol! Thank you for your support. tip!

Thanks for stopping in fishy! And for the tip😁

Another hilarious tale, Ed. That is not normal, you know?

This was funny as well as informational. I have seen a sheep sheered, but, I never know about the overheating business. Almost like they were hatching it! LOL

Great post, Ed~ Tip!

Thanks ms.Wigle😁

For one, brrr that is cold and you definately should have stayed in bed lol. On the other habd you got out and enjoyed life. I did not know the sheered them in the winter for that reason. Very interesting. Thanks for taking us along.

Just wait for next weekends adventure. It will have to be cold.

That would be a cool thing to check out. I'm curious why they would shear the sheep when it's still so cold out though. I would have thought sheep shearing would be more of a spring thing but hey what do I know.

Yeah, I'm not a farmer either. Apparently the mom sheep will seek a warmer birthing place if they are not so fuzzy.

Makes sense to me. Thanks.

That looks like fun?? If you don't mind telling me how much is raw wool worth?

I don't mind at all, I also have no idea!

It is so satisfying seeing a fleece trimmed off like a a slice of butter. Do you know what breed of sheep those are? As a spinner and weaver those fleeces are looking pretty good! I wouldn't mind having the black and gray one to make some clothing with! Nice post!

I dont know what kind they are. I do know some of them are a mix. Check out @tanglebranch's blog for more sheep fun. Maybe she has extra wool?

So cool how you took us o the whole adventure, driving in those conditions is not the best but you mad it safely which is the most important think

brings back memories of when I would help out on an uncles farm with shearing each year damn hard work but a feel good feeling when it is all done and if your lucky not to sore the next day

Your more than welcome to come help anytime J.🐑

Lol in my prime I would have loved to mate
Not these days 😂

Now that is true dedication, heading out in adverse conditions to help out friends shearing. Some super photos, sheep are not best known for posing. I always recall dipping time was a particularly troublesome escapade from my long past days on the farm. Super photos and an awesome tail, thanks for sharing.

I'm glad it brought some memories back champ. Thanks for stopping in.

Well I hope they fed before they tossed ya back out in to the cold after all that hard work! Awesome helping out with ranch!

Yep, we had perogies and sausage.

Yum! They fed you well!!

Great shots of the sheep shearing process. I see you have lots of snow out West.

I wish it was a little warmer so I could at least play in the snow.

You will have to wait a couple months. 😃

All of them looks super cute. Oh and I never knew about the Warm wool and It's connection with Sheep pregnancy, that's some new Info for me.

It was new to me too. Thanks big guy.

Poor naked sheeps, lol... Won't they be so cold in this weather without their coat? It is a very interesting process to see, and they look adorable!

Yep they do look adorable. And yummy too

Nothing could make your shearing adventure more fun than a few well placed sheepish puns.

Yeah I try to make my boring stuff a little entertaining. Doesn't always work though. Thanks for checking it out.

Puns are my forte. Or maybe, bad ones are.

Lol I'm glad you got a post made up for that day!!! I am so hopelessly behind on blogging. Plus I only took one photo all day long, too busy working I guess XD. We were glad yo have the help, anyways!

i am still coming back to stalk you LOL...

Wow...cold work.

Its cold for everything we do up here.😨

Wow ...this was an adventure! It doesn't sound like a fun task ...wool and poop grabbing ...but it is something to remember. Great pics ...felt like I was there except that it's 70 degrees where I sit at the moment.

Thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it😊

That must be so hard on your back, bending over like that all day! I never knew that about shearing to allow the ewe to feel the real outdoor temps. Makes sense, though! Hope there are lots of healthy lambs!

Sometimes they kick around a bit too. @tanglebranch gets a few bruises sometimes. Thanks for swinging by.
