Our Potato Harvest 2016

in homesteading •  7 years ago

In 2017 I didn't raise a garden because I was hiking the entire Appalachian trail which took majorty of the growing season to do. Which means I was not home for maintaining the garden. However in 2016 I had a great garden and here is a view of my potato harvest...

We grow our potatoes in food grade plastic rings. This allows us to add soil as the plants grow and to make it easy to harvest after the season ends.

Can you find the potatoes in this following picture?

Here is a look at the harvested potatoes from one container:

Wow nice fresh from the farm:) i want to try planting potatoes in a drum soon:)

it seemed to work better for me than planting them in the ground. key is to keep the soil really loose. i do this by adding a lot of sand. i use sand for my chicken coop floor and clean it when it gets full of chicken poop. then store it for a year and then mix it with the soil to add nutrients the potatoes need and to loosen the soil.

You weren't even home and you grew more potatoes than a certain numbnutz pretend-homesteader. My potatoes were so-so this year, next year I'm going to go the container route.

ive had good luck with the container growing...
