Sublime Sunday - the shades of autumn

in homesteading •  5 years ago

The trees are only beginning to turn color, so I guess autumn is just getting its feet wet, so to speak. We are in bipolar weather season, when it can change from sun to rain in five minutes or less. Here's the sky over the barn at the farm where the goats are parked.

I turned around and the sky looked like this. Mere minutes later it was pouring, but by the time I got home, the sun was starting to peek back out again.

I have been looking at the dying plants and appreciating the beauty in their decay.

Most of these are weeds, and not considered beautiful when they are in their prime, but I've always thought that weeds are in the eye of the beholder.

I am appreciating every drop of rain that falls, since our spring is still very low, even if it makes the outside chores a little cold and muddy. We've had a lot more rain than usual for September. If we hadn't, the spring would have dried up for sure. As it is, it's limping along and waiting for the rain to seep down and recharge it. Now that the temperature has dropped, less of the rain is evaporating and more is soaking into the ground.

With dampness come the mushrooms, most of which I have no hope of identifying. They are fun to look at, though.

Yesterday morning was cool and crisp. Here's the view from the barn when I was up there feeding the goats. I have always loved the look of the hill when it's shrouded in mist like that.

The clear weather persisted for most of the day, with huge banks of clouds dropping in for a visit and leaving without any fuss. We went over for dinner yesterday with some friends who live right on the river, and the sky cleared up enough for the sun to feel warm on my face, even though the air was still pretty cool. The view from their deck is beautiful and a little distracting. I kept wanting to watch the water instead of the conversation. Fortunately, my friends have the same problem and were not offended.

This morning I woke up to rain and a very chilly house. Today I have to go out and move goats around, which means I will be soaked by the time I get home. Not quite sublime, but something I get used to each time summer says goodbye. I will close with another shot of the ominous sky from the other day. I absolutely love the dark clouds with the sun shining on the scene. It looks apocalyptic but the colors are amazing. Soon enough we will be back to just boring gray from dawn to dark, so I have to appreciate the drama while it lasts.

Blinked, and the weather changed. haha...
Oh my goodness, the lake is so peaceful, serene and beautiful. Who can fault you for being distracted. If it were me, I would have suggested that we just shut up and enjoy the awesome view.
Make the most of the good weather. As you said, it won't be long before it is dull and gray. 😊

I agree. It would have been a great day to just sit together and look at the water. I have been trying to get outside any time it's nice. Today was not nice, but I was outside anyway. Sigh.

I guess there is no rest day on the farm - good weather or not. 😊

🤗Fantastic pictures @goat-girlz !!!!
Your first photo with description cracked me up..😄. I guess I'm just silly this morning. I have never heard reference to goats being parked in a barn before. But I can so wonderfully envision it..🐐👀🐐👀🐐👀🐐 👀 ☺🤗.

Ha ha! I hadn't thought of the funny side of that before. I always say that about the brush goats when they're not on a job. They're either working or they're parked. It's looking like they will be parked for the winter now, since the weather is turning and people aren't thinking about landscaping so much.

The clouds are sure gloomy! But they also produce great colors for photography.
Compare the mushroom to an inkcap or a shaggy mane (at the end of its life cycle) - but would have to see others around it to be more helpful.

It's been dark all day long today! Definitely a day to sit inside by the wood stove and not be out moving goat fences around. Oh wait. I totally did this whole day wrong...

I looked up both of those mushrooms and neither looked right. It has the shape of a common white mushroom, and you can see the white under the black coating, but I don't think I've ever seen one turn black like that without also being slimy and gross because it's at the end of its cycle.

Not sure then. Those little guys are the hardest.

Tomorrow, you need to get your day the right way around again... ;-)
Still the calm before the storm here...

Thank you!

I would say, you have wonderful weather! Certainly not boring weather... :)
Like you, I do appreciate the rain and sun, and its changing its mind every now and then - why not! Adds excitement to our lives... :)) Love the dark sky shots, and the hill with mist ~ awesome!

Thank you! It is wonderfully interesting weather this time of year! And it does add some excitement for sure. I am going through the annual struggle where my body tries to adjust to the new normal temperature. I feel cold all the time. Once I get used to it, I'm okay unless it gets really cold.

Awwww, keep warm, have blankies and wraps around, hot coffee or cocoa and maybe soups... Stay under warm lights too! 😊

A friend of mine came for the weekend and we decided to go to our favorite little UU church and catch up with old friends. One of the women came in and apologized for being late, because her goats got out. I instantly thought of you! Great photos! I love those weed pictures.

Hahaha! That's my most often used excuse for being late, or sometimes not showing up at all! And it's almost always true! I'm glad you liked the pictures. Fall is doing it's pretty routine right now, before everything gets wet and slimy.

It's a great excuse... But alas, no one would believe me if I used it. I might give it a try though!

You should just get a little goat figurine. You could put it outside somewhere and then it wouldn't be a lie...

That might do it! 😂😂😂

I'm not sure we are going to see any lovely fall colors here in north Idaho this year; we just had a highly unusual September snowstorm, dropping 6.25 inches at my house. Next we are supposed to see freezing temps. The leaves may just turn brown and fall off.

Wow! Snow already? That seems crazy early, even for northern Idaho. I am months away from being ready for snow. I'm cranky because it's down in the 40s in the morning!

I understand it hadn't snowed here in September since 1926. Certainly not in the 21 years I've lived here. It is melting away quickly; today's high was in the low 40s. I hope we get autumn now.

Very nice photos of your day! Quite a change in the weather!
We also had less rain this year! Winter breeze is coming soon!
That deck looking over the river is just so nice!

Thank you! We're supposed to get more rain this week, and although we really need it, the sunny days are so beautiful it's hard to wish for rain.

The leaf have chickenpox! hehehe

At least I've already had chickenpox so I won't catch it!
