Garlic scapes crop June 2019.jpg

As I walked back from getting the chicks on pasture, I looked over the fence in the Big garden to see if the garlic had started scapes yet. It sure has, some are nearly 12” long. I’ll be making pesto within a week.

The Rugosa rose is right next to the Big garden and I noticed there were a good many flowers now. So I picked them to dehydrate.

There were only enough for 3 trays, so I cut a bunch of yarrow to fill the dehydrator.

That took care of 1 dehydrator but I decided I should really be running both of them.

I thought plantain leaves would be easy and quick.

You may remember last year my plantain leaves were as big as my foot…..

Well, I was astounded to discover this year’s, from the same plants that were transplanted into the Big garden, are easily twice as large.

And there weren’t just a couple of them. I cut these from just 4 plants of the 10+ I moved.

These Excalibur trays are 14” square….. Amazing what balanced soil will do….

Wednesday I start weeding and mulching in the Big garden, preparing for transplanting gardens.

Wow, look at that plantain! Ours is the narrow leaf type that's not much bigger than a finger. I've got seeds for varigated plantain that I somehow didn't plant. Maybe I should do that...

My chickens did not like narrow leaf. I wild harvested it the first year I did herbs for layers. The wild wide leaf was very small and it was hard to find enough, plus it was really gritty. So that's when I started growing it in the garden. These are grown from the wild harvested seed in my yard...

That's excellent! Like you said, it's amazing what good soil can do!

Wow - those are some massive plantain leaves!! @naturalmedicine community had a plantain challenge not so log ago and a whole slew of posts with ideas for using plantain - you might find them of interest.
