Temp 100F crop July 2019.jpg
Temp inside and out, with AC going

It’s wicked hot and humid here in Western Mass and has been for 2 days. Our passive solar heated house will stay cool if the nights are in the mid 60’s F or lower. But sometimes the night temps are upper 70’s or higher, and the house does not cool down. Then we do a slow boil until the heat moves on.

As I have gotten older, I tolerate this heat and humidity less and less. We were given a small air conditioner last year, and it has been in the living room window since Thursday.

The 2nd floor has not cooled down for 2 days. Friday night I didn’t get to sleep until 11 PM. Saturday night I ended up sleeping in the living room on the couch. The heat is supposed to move on by Monday morning. I hope so, as I have garden work I need to be doing.

The temp in my 2nd floor office drops to low 80’s by early morning, so I have been working there from 3AM until I can’t stand it, doing months of neglected paperwork.

We had a few tag sales on Saturday and my husband found an impact wrench set to go with his compressor for $20. We also noticed a Tile store in Greenfield, much to the north of us, and stopped in there Saturday morning. We found several tiles we liked.

My husband had seen a preview of this movie a couple months ago and so when it came to a local theater, we went to see it Saturday afternoon. It was a fascinating look at the musicians living in Laurel Canyon in the late 60’s and how they came to create the music they did.

Layer frozen treats crop Juy 2019.jpg

On Thursday my helper friend and I emptied and defrosted and cleaned the 2 freezers at the house. Then we put the fan up in the layer coop because the wicked heat was due on Friday. It’s been on since Friday morning.

I’ve kept the freezer at the house stocked with extra frozen treats for the layers. The one on the left is scraps from the kitchen and basil flowers. The right has purslane, clover, pineapple sage, and borage. I’ve also kept plenty of pint size ice cubes made for the broilers. Both flocks have been getting 2 sets of these a day in this heat.

So life is mostly stalled here on the farm until the heat moves on….

We've been hit by a heavy wave as well it's going to be 73 (but feel like 83 with the humidex) today and yesterday was much hotter. It was incredible. All the roses were scorched, and I still can't do a whole lot so I had to just let it be.

It was supposed to rain last night which we hoped would break this heat but no rain yet. The forecast says this afternoon for rain so fingers crossed that it's a nice heavy one and that you get the same relief too!!

My husband's uncle gave him a portable air conditioner and although I really don't like them I'll admit it has been a blessing the past few days. It says that it's 75 in the room we have it in so pretty good. Poor Molly practically just presses up against it like it's her new best friend.

Our old cat either finds a running fan or the room with the AC. I could work between 75 and 85! It's the upper 80's and up to 100F that kills me, with the attending humidity.

They keep threatening rain, but haven't gotten much of anything yet...

hot here too and hopefully going to break tomorrow as well. glad you're doing your best to stay cool. sometimes going to see a movie in the AC is the best option :)
