Rest of seed on drainfield crop September 2019.jpg

The first thing I did was put down the 2# of wildflower seed and set up the sprinkler. I didn’t run it as it was to hit 80F on Friday, after having frost on the windshield for the 2nd day in a row.

While I weeded Row 7 of the New Herb garden, my helper friend put down the last of the wood chips in the walkways. We had some left over so we put it down under the Kousa dogwood. We’d planned to do this back in July but the excavators showed up too soon (or not soon enough).

While I continued in the 7th Row, he started bringing over the stockpiled bales of hay from the Small garden. He got Row 5 mulched then started piling bales in Row 6.

We talked about it while we worked, having him make me a LOT of French onion soup from all the leftover Walla onions. He’s a very good cook! So he left with 5 quarts of my beef stock and 2 huge shopping bags of onions.

It’s a time consuming process and I just don’t have the time or energy to do it myself right now. With 2 frosts already, I doubted I’d get to it before they were gone.

After he left, I finished Row 7 and amended it. It was too hot for me to be out there any longer, so the mulching will have to wait until Sunday.

Saturday is tag sales and the riverboat ride with Richard Little, our local geologist that we love to learn from. I convinced my intern’s dad to bring his family so we are all going together. It should be such fun!

Beautiful! I love to see all that ground cover!! Your plants will be super happy. :) What herbs do you have planned?

Not sure, not finished cleaning out the rest of it to see what survived. Most of what belongs in Row 7 is in my Big veg garden. It will move back next spring. The east end of Row 7 was a hoophouse for ginger. But I can't put it there any more as they put the septic tank there and it's only 3" under the soil, so no posts will hold.

I have to start planning gardens in the next 2 - 3 weeks, so we will see.. But for this year, it's merely getting mulched well, so the soil can recover from the abuse of heavy machinery.

Oh wow! So shallow! Is that common around there? Glad to hear you are working on soil building. Great plan!

The old one was down about 1', I have no idea what is common here.

Looks really beautiful :)

Thanks!
