My husband looked out the window on Wednesday and saw the momma turkey enter that middle pasture through the gate from the driveway. He called to me and I grabbed the camera.

She was far enough away; I was able to take the screen out of the window without alarming her. She came down alongside the Big garden and into the yard under the swingset.

She had 6 little ones with her. When we’d seen her a couple days ago, she’d had 7.

I think the fox, among others, has made inroads in the baby turkey population around here. At one time we used to see them in the dozens, once 42 of them, 3 hens and the rest chicks.

I was out in the garden Friday morning about 7AM and thought I heard a chicken near me. The chicks were in their coop so it wasn’t them. I looked around and saw the hen’s head over the weeds, and froze in place.

She came down the side of the Big garden with the 6 poults, all the way to where I had finally weeded right to the fence. There was an 18” wide gap there and she came right up to it. She decided, even though I never moved, I looked too much like danger and moved her family back down the garden into the yard.

I resumed weeding and all the poults took flight into the trees. Later that morning when my helper friend arrived at 8:30 she was out in the middle of the middle pasture with the babies.
