Whoa! Look what we found at the Share Shed

in homesteading •  7 years ago

I don't know if you are familiar with share sheds, but we have a pretty good one here. I'll copy the post I did about ours last year over here when I get a chance.

Anyhow the share shed is at the dump and it's for stuff that is still good that you think someone might be able to use.

We got this there. See if you can guess what it is? I'm sure a lot of you can.

(Did you say a foot pedal?)

If you did, you were right, but what was it attached to?

(I'm sure a bunch of you already know, but I need to make the post seem like it's worth an upvote.)

Yeah, we got pretty lucky

(We've never had a sewing machine before.)

It seems to be in great condition and it works, so we aren't sure why it was there, but there were two others there and they had auction stickers on them, so maybe someone got a box lot or something. We just took the one because how many do you need?

(Looks like a sewing machine to me.)

It's very heavy and a solidly built contraption, and from what I could glean from a quick Google search it's quite strong and can sew light leathers and canvas. Here's underneath.

(It needs a cleaning, but other than that...)

Everything is greased and looks well taken care of, so I figure we got a good score, but maybe some of you know more about these things than we do. Here's the plate, I found out that it was made between 1968 and 1971, so it's a bit older than I am, but not as worn out.

(I can't find a free manual for it yet, so if any of you come across one, I'd gratefully transfer a bit of SBD for a .pdf.)

So what do you think? Have you ever used this model or a similar one? Gerri is planning to learn how to make curtains first, so we can fill this hole.

(Baby steps. After the curtains will come some underwear or pants. Maybe.)

So that's it. We just wanted to share our great share shed find. Last summer we found this up there with the warranty, manual and all fittings still inside. The guy renovating our kitchen said it was probably someone buying a house and wanting stainless steel or something. Either way, we got a $700 dishwasher right when we were planning a new, white kitchen.

We have similar here. i got a nice working photocopier yesterday. half full drum of toner in it to boot, was gonna just rip it apart for e scrap and to get the pulleys and chains and gear to use on the 3d printer im going to build but then realized it works so gonna use it to print flyers for my landscaping/ garden co hosting and e scrap collection so i can hand one out at every door in town next week, then rip it apart when i run out of toner lol

Hahaha, that's awesome. Are they not worth selling? I would think you could get good money for a working photocopier, but I suppose it depends on the make/condition.

Either way, that's a great find.

Id probably get 100$ out of it, But to buy the same parts i can get out of it to put towards building my 3d printer would cost that or more to order so rather rip it apart to put towards that lol

Oh for sure then. I don't know much about building 3D printers, or any printer. I did see a 3D printer working once at a jeweller in the states. It was making the ring prototype so it could be tried on before making the actual ring. It was pretty cool.

Good find! That is a little newer than the one I learned to sew on. Grandma machine still had the old rocker pedal, so you got your exercise while you were sewing, lol.

Wow. That would actually be pretty neat to see. I think I'll look up some videos on that. Was it hard to get a rhythm down between your hands and foot?

I had problems but I was only about 7. She put books under my feet to reach the petal. lol. My Dad bought her an electric machine for mother's day that year.

Good job. Good sewing machine. You look really excited. Yes, sharing is fun.

Thanks. It sure is.

I have never heard of share sheds before but they sound like a good idea. I don't have a sewing machine like that but my mom did score an old one somewhere for free for us.

Yes, they are great. Our dump is pretty cool because they will also let you pick through the wood and scrap metal piles. I usually grab any decent lumber and bring it home for projects. Wherever we end up, if they don't have a share shed, I'll build one. It's helped a lot of people in our area.

Great find! Once I found what looked like a geiger counter. It even worked. When I turned it on it started beeping. I got a bit scared, and put it down. Now I wish I had have brought it home, but it did have bad vibes. Homemade underwear, hehe. Sounds like a good project!

Oh yeah, hopefully they aren't wool.

I'd take a bad vibe secret item anyday. Then you don't feel bad selling it to the creepy dude that's offering you way more money than you think it's worth. You just want it out of your shed.
