HUGEL MOUND In A BOX?!

in homesteading •  5 years ago  (edited)

My husband came up with a great idea for raised garden beds! Hugel mounds, built inside of four pallets nailed together, and lined with stapled landscape fabric. The boxes are mostly filled with driftwood, various willow branches and other brush, dead grass... every layer covered well with a mix of sand and soil to prevent shrew/mice problems, and finally topped with soil, then compost. The materials in these boxes will decompose into beautiful, rich soil over time, while providing excellent moisture retention. Hugel mounds in boxes are FREE to us due to local resources, with the exception of the landscape fabric, staples, plus our energy, time, and gasoline... amazing... considering we are living in the VERY expensive, remote village of Unalakleet, ALASKA!!!

A hugel mound in a box. Clever idea! I wonder if it will help to contain the heat from the decomposing.
