I don’t know about you, but bread is one of my favourite comfort foods….especially when it is made with flour that we ground at home, from wheat that a neighbour grew. Today I woke up early to bake bread, a symbolic tradition of sharing and friendship…which is perfect for today as @wwf is coming over to help me on the Hempcrete Haywagon House! Today I decided to go on a bread baking extravaganza and bake three loaves. This is enough to last me a week (if it’s just me and the little girls at home). When I have wwoofers, my older children are over, or I have company, I will typically go through 6 loaves a week…sometimes 10.
Lately I’ve been baking a lot of sourdough. After 5 years of trying and trying and trying to get it right…I’ve finally had success! This is a skill I had been trying to foster for so long as the care, nurture and use of sourdough starter means that I have even greater security for my family. It means I don’t need commercial yeast to bake bread…and it tastes amazing.
Today I settled on baking 2 loaves of sourdough…and for a treat, some traditional sandwich bread.
I’m going to share my sourdough recipe first. This is a perfect recipe for newbie sourdough bakers. After all….it worked for me!
And...my ALL TIME favourite whole wheat sandwich bread. This is the old standby bread that I have been baking for almost a decade. It is perfect for using sifted, home ground, whole wheat flour in. I hope you enjoy!

You are very welcome. I didn't. This starter has been alive and well for decades. I was fortunate to get some from a friend. Starters will become more robust based on use over time, and actually also by the span of ecosystems it lives in. Many people will share starters and mix them together for that reason. I am sure @wwf enjoyed the lunch. I just learned how to make sourdough bread as well. I have only been doing it for two weeks. I am enjoying making something that is at least better for the guys.

You know, I use lard because I raise pigs. However, before I started raising pigs I also used cooking oil and it turned out great too. Thanks for reading the post!
