Our Red Ranger Broiler Breeding Stock

in homesteading •  7 years ago

On our homestead we are shooting to be as self-sufficient as we can. We eat chicken a lot so growing our own only made sense in reaching our goal. These are Red Rangers. We have 7 hens and one rooster. Lucky guy. lol

These Reds are not only good for meat. When we are not incubating there eggs we eat them. They are just as good as any other farm fresh egg and most of the time bigger. I am also using them right now to prep some garden beds for spring. I explain how to do that in a previous post. Here's the link https://steemit.com/homesteading/@hopfarmnc/chicken-tractor-and-how-we-use-them

Here are a few of the offspring we have hatched from the Red Rangers. Obviously the ones on the left..lol The one on the right is a Barred Rock. We also process the birds on farm. The sense of accomplishment we had the first time we ate a chicken that we new EXACTLY how they and there parents ate and how they lived was hard to describe. Who else out there raises there own meat chickens? I'd love to hear about it...

This is really neat. I'm curious how the chickens deal with the snow?

Thank you @kiristin! They did well. Didn't lose any. A couple got a little frost bite on there comb during the 6 degree week we had but they'll make it. Thanks for asking and welcome to Steemit!!😁

Oh no! Sorry to hear that but glad they’ll be ok. It was extremely cold for an unusually long time. Good to hear they all made it! 😃

Damn dog homesteading
you got solar panels and all that too?

Not yet. We will have the land and house payed off in 3.5 years. After that we are going to build a house with all the off grid amenity's.
