Building Your Homestead Paradise, What Would it Look Like??? #homesteading #ifyoucandreamityoucandoit

Now, I know that I'm not going to be able to make my dreams come true in the next few days, but I am always looking at available properties to start our homestead. We currently have a home just 10 minutes outside Minneapolis, but obviously with what we want to do, we know we will going farther out than 10 minutes. Anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours is in the realm of do-ability for us. Close enough to get back and see family, far enough to live in fairly quiet solitude while being able to work our land with all the animals we want, like chickens, other fowl, goats, maybe some pigs, a dog or two, not a cat person but I hear they can help on the homestead.

My old, most favorite chicken, Sol. A Black Sexlink. RIP

We have a small wishlist when it comes to what we want to accomplish.

  • Grow our own food. From fruit trees to vegetables and everything in between. We do live in the northern climate, so our options are somewhat limited to what will survive the winter.
  • Animals to take care of, love, and have an equal partnership with. I don't want to run a slaughterhouse, but if we can give good lives to our livestock, and in turn they provide us with their bounty, I'd call that a fair deal. What animals do you recommend?

  • Acreage. 2-25+ acres. We want land for multiple reasons. Enough to have our animals roam free for the most part, enough to have a large enough garden, and large enough to be away from neighbors for privacy. Is there a thing as having too much land?

  • Preferably, water, sewer, and electric would be on site. I have no issues being off-grid, but the property would have to be pretty perfect. Is there such thing as a turn-key homestead? We would like to be off-grid completely at some point, but being up & running asap is pertinent.

  • Some type of living quarters, whether it be an old farm house, RV, trailer, cabin, just something to lay our head and protect us from the elements. I have found it to be quite difficult to get a land loan, so this is almost a necessity.

  • A body of water. A river, a lake, a pond, a creek, anything with water. I understand that makes the property more expensive, but we want ducks and might even try to do a little fish eco-system if it proves doable and efficient.

Here are two examples of properties we would highly consider, so you have an idea of what we are looking for.
#1 and #2

This would be Heaven on Earth

Budget is really going to come down to location. I can make more money staying closer to the metro area, but with that usually comes a little higher cost of living. Being out in the sticks would be cheaper, but job opportunities and pay decrease as well. We would love a lower mortgage than we have now, so anything under 200K would be ideal.

So fellow homesteaders, help me out. Am I asking for too much? Not enough? As of now, our family consists of my wife and I, our daughter, and soon to be born son. We plan on adding at least one more child down the line.

I have read up on Salitin and other homestead prophets, but I want to hear from the Steem Homesteaders mouth. Help a brother out! Much love y'all

Is there such thing as a turn-key homestead?

lol...probably is; from burnt out homesteaders who now want to buy a condo near the beach.

Thank you for visiting my post. I wish you and your family well.

Good call, if you know of any in my neck of the woods, let me know! And thanks!

If I discover a lead for you, I'll let you know...

Thanks man, I appreciate that!

food variety doesn't necessarily need to be limited. check out http://www.citrusinthesnow.com/

Good info to have, thanks for the link!

I’m a suburbanite with no actual experience raising an animal as anything but a pet, but for what it’s worth, from what I’ve read and heard on podcasts, you might want to explore quail as an alternative to chickens.

I like quail, although I've never had any. I like chickens too, though, seeing as I have had them. If anyone would like to give a +/- comparison to chicken vs quail I would love to hear it!

The amount of land you will need will depend on some factors. What animals you want to have, cows need about one acre per animal for feed during the summer and about the same about of land for hay for winter feeding, maybe a little more. You can put a few goats and sheep on that acre with the acre for hay in the winter. The more land and animals mean more time working with those animals and also taking care of the land. If you are wanting city or even county services for water and sewer you will not be getting many choices for land that is going to be zoned for the animals, like cows and pigs or goats for that matter. You will have to step out of the comfort zone for that without a doubt. Yes, please check with planning and zoning in the county the land is in to be sure you can do what you want to do and the animals you want to have on your land.

Are you saying if I start from scratch? If the properties I'm looking at don't have city services, they do have a well and septic in place which would suffice. Would you see any issues with that?

Yes, that is what we have here a septic and a well. That is what many of us out in the county have to use. That is no problem. You can also check into composting toliets and use your gray water to water plants and trees. Always check zoning and planning in that county to make sure they will give you no trouble with what you want to do.

Your favorite chicken? Did you grow up on a farm?
Your want list looks pretty typical from what I can tell. I don’t have a whole lot of knowledge when it comes to the animal side of things but I would say there is such thing as too much land. I would only get as much as you have enough time to take care of.
I went to the nursery near me earlier this summer, and found out that we can grow grapes here?! And pears too! I had no idea. The owner told me they are small pears but hey, fruit is fruit!

Staying 30min-2hrs outside the city. I can understand why you’d want to do this. But let’s look at things at this way. Ok first, I’m not sure what you do for a living, so I don’t know what kind of hours you work. But if you want to homestead, that is going to take a lot of your time. Now sure if you live 30min away, that may not be too bad. But then, how much more tempting will it be to visit the city? If you’re 2 hours away, hmm idk about that. Will that leave you much time to tend to things at home. Speaking as a wife(with 3 kids) whose husband is always busy during the summer, it’s hard to be the one to do most of the work that needs to be done at home. I know you’d probably like to have best of both worlds, but unfortunately, most people have to pick one or the other (depending on how deep into homesteading you want to go of course.)

Well those are just some of my thoughts anyways!

I did not grow up on a farm, even though we had 7 acres. Our neighbors had horses who I would tend to, and another neighbor had chickens. But that chicken (Sol), and a few others, I had at my current home here in Robbinsdale. Urban chickens for the win!

My neighbor here says he has grown peach trees here! I've seen a few wineries popping up too, so grapes are doable as you say. But I hadn't heard of pears. Nice, good to know!

As for travel time to work, I could have been more specific. Regardless where we end up, 30 mins max to my job is about what we want. So even if we are 2 hours north of the cities, my job would still be 30 mins from the homestead :)

As always, I appreciate your thoughts greatly!

Ohhh, I gotcha now! Well half an hour from your job isn’t too bad then! You sure you wouldn’t rather move way up here in the boonies?!

Ahhhhh, I got a buddy up in the Virginia/Eveleth area that I could see hanging out with a bunch if we went that far. But I think you're even farther than that! No?

That's also a good sized trip (travel wise) if we wanted to do make it consistently.

Yup, further north and on the other side of the state.

Thats really exciting @intothewild!!!! All the best to you and your family on your new venture!!! I am certain that you will find the perfect spot that connects well with ALL of you!! MWAH! xoxoxoxo

I love your spirit @jaynie! Thanks so much! Life's plans always seem to fall into my lap, so I'm trying my best not to force it, and just let it happen on its own. Mwah right back atcha!

That is the BEST way to wing it! ALWAYS!!!!! xoxoxoxo

I would say Robbinsdale off hwy 100 is a good spot for you!

Hahaha, work life is the deciding factor. Should know in the next week or so what that looks like :)
