OCTOBER
I can't believe that OCTOBER is nearly over. Here are some of my top tips to finish the month off down on your plot/garden.
1- Lift main crop potatoes and store in lightproof potato sacks, they can be left in
the ground but there is a good chance slugs will have them.
2- Grab a pear! It can be hard to tell when your pears are ready but the same as apples; gently twist the pear and if it comes away from the tree easily with it's
stalk it's ready, if not leave it.
3- Plant some Kale, this is a great veg that will see you over the winter. If you
don't have space, Curly Kale (Borecole) is good for pots. You can find lots of plug plants online to give you a head-start.
4- Plant Herbs and get a head-start for Spring; try Chives, Marjoram, Curly Parsley or some Chocolate Mint.. go on start a herb garden.
5- This may sound silly but get planting Strawberries, doing this now should give
you healthy plants next Spring.
6- Plant over-wintering autumn Onions, eye-wateringly easy to do!
7- Clear away old plants as your Summer crops come to an end. Weed the area
to prevent weeds from setting seed. Cover your beds with fleece; not only will
this keep weeds down it will keep them snug so the Spring veg will grow better
A good month.
