Good morning everyone!
I cannot begin to tell you how often I get asked this question; “How can you care for all of those animals you have and still work a full time job that demands 60 plus hours a week?”
To be honest, sometimes when I think of it, I can’t believe it either. However, through research and commitment, you soon find out it can be done.
I am a blue collar, factory worker who works in the automotive field, like most of my fellow “Detroiters”. I wake up at 5AM, every day. I start work at 6AM, every day. My commute takes me 20 minutes to get to my shop where I don’t get home until 6 or 7 at night (sometimes later). That leaves me with about 40 minutes in the morning to take care of things around the urban homestead, which is plenty of time.
Like everyone else, I wake up, brush my teeth, make my coffee, etc. Then I head out to the “barn” (our garage). Taking care of the rabbits, quail and chickens takes less than 10 minutes of my time every morning, seriously, that’s it!
The video attached to this post shows you the morning routine. It is simple, quick and efficient. The benefits of raising these animals far outweigh the “inconvenience” of waking up earlier to do so. Eggs, meat, and fertilizer for the garden; yep, they all come from my own backyard; and I LOVE IT!
Take a look at the video, if you have the time. If you like what you see, please follow me here on Steemit and on YouTube! This way you don’t miss out on any of the content I put out.
Urban Homesteading is all about making the best out of your current situation, follow me and I ‘ll show you how to have “country life” benefits, no matter where you live!
All the best,
-Johnny G

Yes! It takes work to care for animals and still have time for other things. I have my boys that take care of the sheep. I'm so thankful. But making the time for it all, you also get the reward of it all.

All true, yes it takes work and you're right that the benefits outweigh the inconvenience. Just a bit of advice, be sure to add other categories to your post so more people can see/find it. Add categories like, Adventure or Life, Blog and Story. The homesteading category is key but if you add others, more people will see your post! Keep at it!

Nice video! Have you ever though about adding a little alfalfa flakes to your quail food mix?

No, I have not, but that seems like a good idea! Do you own quail? How does it work for you feeding them those?

Currently we do not on our homestead but in years past so yes. We feed alfalfa pellets to our sheep in the winter so we would simply sift off some of the fine flakes and mix it into the quail food at 5% roughly. We had great success and we do this also with our turkey chicks. I spoke to an old timer about this years ago and he said it is needed for wild birds, it aids in digestion.
