One Of Our Chickens Was Killed

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello everyone! I hope all are doing well and all that all the fathers are having a good Father’s Day. Its extremely hot here, so it looks like we will be spending most of the day inside trying to stay cool. In spite of the hot weather, the wild animals are still out roaming and trying to do some damage.

So to start things off, we have some sad news. At some point the other day, something had dug a hole under our six-foot chain link chicken pen and killed one of our chickens. It seems to have happened sometime during the day when we were not around. At first we did not know what did this, but after looking around, we have found several pieces of evidence that have pointed to the potential culprit.

Raccoons! During this time of year, raccoons are a real problem on our homestead. Whether they are eating all our strawberries, corn, or other various sources of food, they can really wreck some havoc. We have had years where we thought we would be able to put up a lot of food and then we get hit hard with an overabundance of raccoons.

So, our solution involves removing them from our homestead. This way we get to keep more of our food and also we do not worry about them harming any more of our animals. We start by setting live traps and try to relocate them, but these suckers are smart. Uh! We are going to try to get on this problem early this year by setting a few more traps and hopefully that will help. We hate the fact that we lost one of our hens, but I think we can prevent the loss of any others.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all enjoy the rest of your day.

We tried relocating ours until we got caught. It's illegal in Mass... So we just built to deal with them.

Really illegal! We have been thinking about putting up some fence to keep them out, so maybe that would help. I guess only time will tell. Thanks for commenting!

Here is Missouri, you can shoot pretty much anything that is messing with your livelihood. There is no shortage of raccoons and their friends. So far we have been 3 years of having chickens, 5 years of living here, and no critters have bothered any of our animals. I'm sorry you lost a hen and the eggs she might have produced. I hope you can catch the 'coon that got her!

Thanks @hetherur240! In the past, we have had to shoot them and then the problem goes away for a few years. This year looks like it might be one of those busy years. Thanks for stopping by!

That is no fun. very Frustrating

Yeah it can be @bowentroyer. I am hoping we can get the issue under control. Thanks for commenting!
