The Challenges Of Cold And Snow Living Off The GridsteemCreated with Sketch.

Greetings Steemians!

This past Sunday it snowed for now the third time since the beginning of October. This particular one was forecast as flurries, but ended up a full blown Winter storm. We had white out conditions most of the day Sunday, and then Monday I awoke to this

I took this photo as I was clearing snow from my solar panels

After cleaning my panels and resting for a bit, the skies cleared away for the most part, but the temperature was not going to get above 27 that day.

My panels after I got them cleared away.

I knew Monday morning I was in for some extra work in the cold. Living out here under the best conditions requires more work than living in an urban environment. Then after I got caught up, I got a call from a new friend and until recently a homeless veteran. We've been giving him rides at times and he needed one to his MRI appointment in nearby Taos New Mexico. He also lives off the grid, but has no way into town and his fellow vet was stuck in the snow, so I had to fire up the 4x4 and commit myself to a full day of it.

Took this one as I was leaving the homestead. The view of the Sangre De Cristo to the East was beautiful.

I took this one at the end of my road as I am about to turn onto HWY 64

The snow is still on the ground as of today and Tuesday morning it got down to -20 F. So it will likely be here for some time.

Sometimes I do miss some of the comforts of living in the city and on the grid, but this experience has taught me a lot in terms of facing ones fears, getting up and doing what it takes and having pride in myself for having doing it. Maybe one day when I'm just too old I'll trade this in for living some place like Colorado Springs or similar, but until then, this is and has been well worth the struggle. For in the end it's not the shit that we have, it's the thrill of the struggle and the bragging rights of knowing you can survive where others may dare to even try.

Peace!

Hope you all have a wonderful day and please go and check out my music!

I didn't realize that it could get down to minus 20 down there. I know how cold that is...

Yes and unfortunately a water pipe burst under my home as it thawed. I hate having to pay for a plumber, they charge more than a friggan electrician around here. So I'm going to have to double up on the insulation once that gets repaired :(

Yeah, broken water pipes definitely suck!
Do you have a heater tape wrapped around the pipe?

No, I'm using pex. It's rated for up here but there was an old pvc elbow that busted coming off that. It's replaced with pex now and we wrapped everything with an extra layer of r6 reflectix.
