Cropping Out And Replanting What I Can Before The Fall

It's getting to be that melancholy time of year...

IMG_7960.JPG

The sunflowers' petals are wilting, they are bowing their heads in preparation to give birth to thousands and thousands of seeds.

IMG_7956.JPG

This particular pair really pulls my heartstrings, it's like they are holding each other in a comforting embrace before eventual and unescapable death.

IMG_7965.JPG

A late bloomer, I only got one of these kinds to sprout this year, it is one stalk with multiple flowers.

IMG_7955.JPG

Another late bloomer will be holding on for a while yet, brightening my days.

The view from across the road now...

IMG_7959.JPG

I got a bit smart this year and planted tall cosmo flowers in front of the sunflowers so that when the sunflowers start dying off, it's still a joyous sight with the cosmos in full bloom!

I tore out all of our sugar peas...

It took me the better part of a day, removing all the plants, and then getting all of the seeds, there were tonnes. And of course they're not all for me. Every year I give away as much seed as possible. Last year I mailed out 30 stuffed-to-the-gills envelopes all over Canada to help my friends garden for le$$.

The above photos show where the sugar peas used to be, and as you can see it's all replanted with the seeds I had just harvested.

IMG_7938.JPG

As you can see I still have a lot of seed left over, and of course I'll have even more in November when this next crop is done.

Yesterday I showed all of you how our two youngest sons helped us harvest our potatoes, read/watch "Children Are Great Homesteaders" if you would like.

IMG_7945.JPG

And you know, can't have good empty spaces going to waste, not when we still have time to grow, so this is all green beans now, should be able to get a great crop off before the cold weather starts, usually in November.

Next I harvested lettuce which was going to seed.

IMG_7966.JPG

And I decided to plant some kale and some slow bolt arugula. I have lettuce on my walkway that I am fully letting go to seed and which I will harvest from, so we will have plenty of seed without letting these rows go. I have been giving lettuce away like crazy haha everywhere I go lately...Here! Have some lettuce! It's so life giving to be a part of the Food Is Free Project, and make sure to follow @FoodIsFree because John (the founder) has joined Steemit!

Lastly, let's take a look at some flora and some squash!

This is beautiful!! I love your garden, and the way you re-use the space. I also started planting my fall plants but it's nowhere near as impressive as yours!! I love the photos you took. You inspire me to get outside again and see what else i can plant for the appeal as well as food!!

Ooh right on, happy I could inspire you! What will you be planting?

Some lettuce and turnips, and hoping for some more broccoli and cauliflower. But now i want to plant something pretty.... Have to check out my seeds and see what I have grow time for!!

Right on! I'm excited for you <3 Good luck @tiredmama!

Your sunflowers are looking great, so full of seeds in those top 2 photos! I like fall gardening. Some plants that people think of as spring crops do better in the fall, I think -- like spinach, bok choy, and kohlrabi that bolt so easily in the spring, and turnips and carrots that get wireworm pressure in the spring.

Our summers are so dry in the US Pacific Northwest, so I look forward to the return of rain -- irrigation isn't the same! And so many wonderful edible weeds and mushrooms come back with that rain, too.

Enjoy the last days of your summer and enjoy your summer gardening, @lyndsaybowes! :D

Ooh right on, I can't wait to see your newest foraging posts, it's been a while @haphazard-hstead!

The summer went so fast, didn't it?

I feel like I just met you, and watching your garden grow up has been such a part of my experience on here. But it's been two months already!

Yes, the summer has gone fast, and I feel as if we just met too, I guess time flies when we're having fun Winston!! xoxoox :) :) Been such a pleasure getting to know you!

Yes. We are in a place where we can plant multiple craps. I can thank you for just giving me the kick in the butt needed to get out there and start cleaning out the beds. Thanks again. 🐓🐓

HAHAHA! My pleasure!

Thanks to you I can say 4 out of 7 containers are ready to go. Glad you got a kick out of that! 🐓🐓

Way to GROW @mother2chicks, I'm gonna be creepin' on your page now to see the progress!! haha!!

For us, dry season begins in December and lasts through to May. This is the most depressing time of year. No rain. No flowers. Just dry and more dryer. We water all the time and have vegetables and fruit. Some flowers. But it's not the same as rain water.

Oooh WOW! That would sure be a challenge keeping everything watered and healthy in the dry season!

That's why I have two wells and two water tanks (one 10,000 litres he other 2500 litres). And sometimes that's not enough...

Incredible! Thank you for sharing, that's just crazy! And here we complain about the snow, but really everywhere has a winter, some are just different than others...

A long "winter" in FL lasts 2 days ;). We tend to bitch about the cold when it gets down to the 50's. Personally, I love it when the temperature drops, as I can break out my sweet sweater collection (mostly Christmas gifts from my grandmother over the years [she bought, and made, amazing sweaters!])

---Homa

AHHAA!! That is too cute, and I know that all the Canadian snowbirds are easy to spot down there, you're in your Xmas sweater, they're all tanning at the beach LOL!!

Wow very beautiful @lyndsaybowes, I love sunflowers, the way you plant sunflowers is so interesting that it still looks beautiful by planting a cosmo flower in front of it

Thank you <3

You're welcome 👌👌👌

Getting ready to bring in last few corn stalks, sunflowers are still thriving so I'll leave them for now. Been restocking ALL my dried herbs. Almost time ti can tomatoes and pickles

Ooh right on, you're as busy as a BEE by the sounds of it! :)

lol- it's hard not to be this time of year. Bring in the bounty all the while planting more for the fall harvest. BUT I LOVE it!

Was nice to see a bee still keepin on keepin on :)

---Homa

P.S. Your kids are very fortunate!

Aw, I'm glad you noticed the Bee! Yes, there are still tonnes of them moseying all around, they just love the sunflowers, and the greenhouse with all the tomatoes and cucumbers!!

Those wildflowers are a sight to see. I'm already planning my wildflower garden for next spring :)

That's so great, the Bees and Butterflies will thank you <3 <3

I love all your posts! Your Garden is beautiful! I need to pull out all the maters and plant beets and carrots! What state

Oooh right on, you must live in a decent climate to be able to plant another crop of beets and carrots! Cool!

Ed has garden envy.

Ed needs to move to Nova Scotia!

D'awwwwww...hahahaaa :) :)

Oh, this is wonderful. I will make a post from my garden in a couple of days.
...And I will borrow some of your ideas for the next season. ;)

That's great that you're able to get some ideas! Thank you for letting me know <3

What a beautiful yard. I bet your sunflowers have brought joy to countless number of motorists. Planting those cosmos was a great idea.

I missed the post with the kiddos. I'm heading over there now to see.

<3 ~ <3 ~ <3 Yes, I love to see everyone's smiles as they walk or drive by our place, it really uplifts me!

Beautiful...and good garden..., have a nice day @lyndsaybowes

Thank you so much @slempase!

What an absolutely beautiful space!!! If I'm half the gardener you are in 5 years I'll be thrilled!!!

Ooh trust me, it's easier than it looks, all you need is a little time and patience. This is only my 3rd year, seeds want to grow!

You're doing a good job keeping things going for the fall. I'm sure your growing season is less than mine. I don't know if you saw my post but here's what I'm doing for the fall so far.
