Growing hops for your home-brew beer :)

in homesteading •  8 years ago

Hello fellow Steemians!

You probably haven't seen my first post where I mentioned that I have just started growing hops to use in my home-brewed beer.

I am currently growing Golding hops but will add more varieties to my collection over the next couple of years.

A little about Golding hops:
A classic British hop, Goldings have a background as East Kent Golding but are grown in Hereford and Worcester. They provide floral and citrus overtones and are an excellent choice for bitter, pale ale, ESB, blond, tripel, saison and kölsch-style beers.

I've also only just started creating my own home-brew and have started with a recipe that will make a beer similar to Chimay Blue.

Here's a pic of one of my 6 hops plants about 3 days after I planted it as a cutting from a much more established plant:

As of this morning, this is how quickly the cuttings have established themselves (well some, a couple might not survive):

As you can see, these plants will grow fast. It will take about a year before they provide a decent harvest however so that gives me a little over 12 months to learn what I need to know in order to brew with my own hops. For the time being, I'll be purchasing my hops in pellet form from my local brewing store.
