Yellow Jackets In The Garden - OUCH!

Believe it or not, these painful creatures can be very beneficial if you allow them to do their work undisturbed. They are great at searching out, killing and eating harmful worms that would destroy your tomato plants and cabbage plants. Yes, if they decide to build their nest in an area that could pose a danger to children or pets, they need to be dealt with but if not, they can be a strong ally in defending your garden!

I'm going to come back to this, I have a chemical free way to repel them.

I just have to write the post.

Awesome!

Sorry it took so long, I had to fire up the old netbook and it takes a while for the boiler to come up to temp.

you did not use a blow torch to fire that up did you ? ;)

I enjoy the different perspective on an insect considered by most to be a nuisance.....

I'm not a big fan of yellow jackets, but you've made me reconsider.

LOL totally! Easy to hate, hard to love.

No yellow jackets around but plenty of daddy long legs. They seem to show up IN my house a lot in the spring. I told them the aphids were outside but they don't listen.

If you did have to kill a nest you could come back later and pour melted aluminum down the hole. There is a guy on Youtube that does that with ant hills and some of his creations have been displayed in museums. To my knowledge nobody has done the same with yellow jackets.

I have seen that. It's pretty cool!

Zac, what about wasps? I seem to have those around more than anything. Do they have similar benefits?

I use the dawn treatment. 1/4 or so dish detergent to a spray bottle. Bloby spray. What to hit them with a soaking spray. Get the wings wet and cover the body. One hit for a yellow jacket. 2 3 for a black hornet. Don't kill the segmented vatieties they are our friends.

nice video, you are so right-we often go by first instinct and destroy everything that seem soooo dangerous...let them live and work for you, right!

Luckily we don't have very many but we still have some where I live. I was moving a wood pile and really got nailed for disturbing a nest. Got quite a few stings before getting away. I never saw the nest and they were on me before I knew it. The worst is when you are mowing and run over a nest. I have had to bail off the mower and run before. Not funny when it happens but funny now thinking about it. Thanks for sharing!

Wow! I did not know this about yellow jackets! Thank you.

I know they're good guys overall but... there seems to be so many here on my property! I am on a constant look out for their nest because I've been stung for the first time and another person was stung three times! We've yet to find it though... they're constantly around me... it's like they're missiles aimed for just me! Buzzing me in the face ... I can hardly get anything done. Uggghhh

Yeah, if they are bothering you, they have to go.

I have 20 acres and a blue spruce that I have learned that they love! THEY COUKD BE COMING FROM MILES AWAY!! It's sad. Haha

Wow! Great info I didn't know that they could be beneficial πŸ‘πŸ» Thank you!

Good information. I never knew yellow jackets and daddy long legs were beneficial to the garden. Love your post.

Thanks and thanks for watching!!

Thanks for the info. Will defiantly have to rethink the destroy first attitude I have for these little monsters. Seems inevitable that i get tangled up with one of these nest at least once every year. By the way gasoline down the hole wipes them out every time, just do it at night.

Yes sir, they sting if force when you disturb them, I agree they are here for a reason, but we keep a watch if there is a nest close to the house or garden. I normally use 90% rubbing alcohol to put a nest to sleep.

We just pour gasoline down the hole...not a lot because its an instant kill and the fumes will travel through the rest of the nest and kill them all.

Thanks Zac I never new this info.

nice post keep it up i expect such an awesome post from you my full support is with you

Watched a video by One Yard Revolution today, he was talking about the need for them to go after the squash bugs.

Cool! I like his channel...he is so cramped in...he desperately needs a homestead.

Being in Chicago, he just needs to get out of there.

now that I've figured out how to share your content on steemit I've shared this video :)

I have tried to live with them in my garden but whenever they build a nest in it I get stung. Yellow jackets are the most aggressive wasp I have ever experienced. If I see a nest in my garden I immediately try to exterminate. They also eat my second crop of raspberries a lot in the fall. Sorry I just think the cons outweigh the pros with yellow jackets.

I totally get you. I don't let them build IN the garden. They have to be outside of it and in a place my kids won't mess with them. And you are CORRECT, later in the season when there are fewer worms and caterpillars to snack on, they go for the sweets. I'm picky with how I will co-exist with them...but they can be a beneficial bug.

I had one in my compost pile one year. What a nightmare!

They don't normally bother you unless you are within a certain distance to their nest so I don't actively try to kill them unless the nest is within that danger zone.
