I've always fancied the idea of a top bar hive, but SA doesn't allow them. 😔

First inspection of our top bar hive.

Is there a legal reason you can't have them?

Beekeeping seems to be highly regulated here. You can only use langstroth hives and they have to be registered.

As far as I understand the laws here in Australia, we can use any hive we like as long as the comb is removable for inspection. We also need to register our hives.

I'll have to look into it again. Last time I looked we couldn't have top bars in South Australia. That was a couple of years ago, though.

This link from South Australia Primary Industries mentions registering top bar/warre/flow hives so I thing you would be ok. In the past many people believed top bar style hives were illegal because the regulations all reference the hives needing removable FRAMES, which of course top bars don't have. But the intent of the law is that the comb be removable for inspection, which is no problem in a maintained top bar. So i think it has been accepted that bars are an acceptable alternative to frames. But be sure and do your own research 👍👍
