Homesteading update

in homesteading •  7 years ago

Hello Steemit friends. I hope everyone is well today.
I've been growing my own vegetables recently, all from seed and i'd like to give a little update as to how things are growing so far.
My tomato plants i started indoors and i think at first they needed to climitise to the greenhouse conditions bit by bit rather than putting them out straight away.

This is how they are looking at the moment.

As you can see they are starting to become more established now. I need to get rid of the weeds and get some twine ready to help support them with some canes i have placed in each pot ready.
I had a little problem with snails feasting on my baby plants and had to resort in slug pellets which seem to be doing the job.

I have just one lonely potato plant as i dont eat them too often so coming across a spare sprouting spud is a rare occurance in my household 😁

Snowball Turnips.

Some sprouting beetroot.

And some broccoli...

All of these are being grown in some self made planters. I found the wooden frames in work which are handy.
I did have a problem with some cats thinking these planters resembled kitty litter trays but nothing a bit of mesh over the top won't fix! Naughty cats!

I have planted some peas and mangetout but they haven't sprouted as of yet.
Thank you for reading my update on my homesteading. Hopefully next time i will have some flowers and even some little veggies appearing.

Till next time, take care!!

I was just going to recommend beer and crushed eggshells, but @pumpkinsandcats has already done so - so I will second that recommendation instead ;o) Slug pellets can be deadly to all manner of things other than slugs and are known to be poisonous to hedgehogs, which are lovely little beings. I definitely recommend using other methods isntead. It's really a shame that they are still allowed to sell them.

I didn't want to have to use pellets, my mother passed them onto me, i have to be careful where i put them also as i have a tortoise and i know they will be bad for him...
I don't want anymore hedgehog blood on my hands, already lost one to my pond which i have made a little exit slope now so fingers crossed i won't find anymore hedgehoge corpses in my garden! 😢

Ooooooh no, poor hodgepodge! They are very good at getting themselves into places they can't get out of, aren't they?! We've found a couple of long-dead ones on the property (and rescued a couple more) since moving to where we live now in the Peak Park. I've also tried to help two more who didn't make it, and I strongly suspect slug pellets were to blame. They really shouldn't be allowed to sell them, as so many people use them without having any idea they're bad for wildlife. Get crushing those eggshells, @missysheshe86 - slugs don't enjoy walking on them any more than we do! ;o) (Obviously they don't bother me personally, with my footpads, lol)

Thank you for your very helpful advice and i will do just that!
I'll give the beer trap a go too.... do i just pour if around the outside of the greenhouse?...
Neighbours will think i'm a right slosh bucket when they get a face full of beer wind 🤣

For your snails and slugs use crushed egg shells and a beer trap. Nicer than pellets ha ha

Looking forward to seeing the mangtout never seen that grow before!

A beer trap?....what is that? My egg shells are going into my compost heap and i don't think i will have enough for around the greenhouse and my planters 😭

Ask everyone you know for shells basically!

As for the beer, get some of supermarkets ownbrand, dig a hole, place beer glass in, fill with beer. Slugs are allured to the beer and sadly drown but are probably very drunk before that. One saving grace

great!

Thanks @kenhsu, i am getting there slowly but surely!
I have some herbs too but from seed they are taking there time. You can't rush nature ;-)

We keep cats out of our planters by covering them in pine cones. They're just pokey enough that the cats don't dig in them. The best part is, they're free!

Hey great tip with pine cones! Fortunately for me the previous home owners left the fence mesh stuff so was nice and free for me 😉

Right on! Well if you ever run out now you know what to do!
