We have been off grid for some time now. But the one thing that keeps coming up for us is lighting. We have tried many types of lighting in our house. I guess each one had its ups and downs. Today I want to talk to you about some of the lighting decisions we have made. Then finally telling you what we use today. I would love to hear your ideas, thoughts, or what you have used.
Candles:
We first started off using candles. We really liked the way the candles looked and how it gave off a soft calming glow in the house at night. Now we did not allow our children to have any candles. We would give them little solar lights that you would place out in your yard. This way they would not feel left out. Now with the candles we have found that you have to have a lot of them! On top of that the candles just do not last that long. I guess if you would get the bigger candles then they would last longer. But for us we just used the regular sized ones and had to replace every three days. We had to finally stop using them because it was just costing to much to keep using them. Not to mention cleaning up any run away wax you might have.
Kerosene Lanterns:
The second decision we made for our lighting in our home was kerosene lanterns. The reason we wanted to try this type of lighting was because it offered the same mellow calmness as the candles. But the best part was we didn’t need as many to light up the room! The only draw backs to the kerosene lanterns were and I believe still are difficulty reading and writing in the low light. Then you have to keep kerosene on hand all the time. Then the last thing is you should always have good airflow in your home when using them. So we always had to have our windows opened at lest two inches all the time.
What we use Today!
It has come down to us deciding that we just had to have more light in the house.
We didn’t want to keep cooking by the soft glow of the candles or kerosene lanterns. So we had our house wired with lights that would work with our solar system. We now use LED lights but we still have our kerosene lanterns! We still use our kerosene lanterns when ever we just feel like chilling out after our children are fast asleep.
So please tell us what have you used. What was your favorite?
LED and kerosine lanterns. The warm glow of lanterns/candles cannot be beat.

I don't live off the grid, but I think that LED lights with solar power is a practical solution to the problem. The lights don't use much energy compared to other types of bulbs, so the battery charge lasts longer.

Don't live off grid either, but we used LED lights as well. They last a long time and don't require a lot of power. Agree with amberyooper. 🐓🐓

The LED lights was really the best thing for us to do at this point. They give off so much light and your right we don't have to worry about them using up so much energy!

I don't live off grid personally but my first thoughts were solar lights and battery operated lanterns. I have a concern when it comes to candles for a prolonged use.

With the candles you do have to be careful. We could never leave them unattended so that made it a pain in the butt.

You are very inspiring. Thanks for sharing! Just one question- Have you used solar panels or would you consider using them?

Yes we have our whole house wired to solar panels. We are able to power everything that we need with 1000 watts of solar.

I am always worried with the kids having candles and kerosene so I found some turn on/turn off solar lights with bright lumen output like 80 to 120 I found them at our local Canadian Tire and TSC. You just mount the small solar panel outdoors and the wiring is fed to the unti with the light indoors and you can turn it on and off as needed. It was a great investment and pretty cheap less than $50. Thanks for sharing. Upvoted and following

Thank you so much for upvoting and following. I will have to see if we have any thing like that around here! That sounds like a great idea and a safe way to do things.
