in homesteading •  7 years ago

This is the second video in my Animals on the Homestead Series.

After my previously rabbit video I will continue on by featuring my Guinea Fowl. By way of reminder, these particular birds for our homestead were provided in part with donations from @matthewtiii and @vcelier! Thanks again (and always) guys!

ANIMALS ON THE HOMESTEAD VIDEO 2 – GUINEA FOWL

A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER

  • Guinea Fowl help to control and eliminate certain pests, like ticks.

  • Guinea Fowl can reproduce well on their own.

  • Guinea Fowl can make quite a bit of noise.

  • Guinea Fowl are not as good at caring for their young as they are at hatching them.

  • Guinea Fowl may run, or fly, away.

  • Guinea Fowl may be considered to be ugly.

  • Guinea Fowl are edible and so are their eggs.

  • Guinea Fowl keets (babies) can be sold as a possible source of income (as can the adults).

Great video as usual my friend. How loud are the roosters? and what about fox and coyote there?

There are coyotes, and you can hear them at night. Haven't seen any close yet though. The roosters are loud enough, but we don't always hear them.

My wife is from Russia, and on her dad's place they are very large and louder than you can imagine. Guaranteed to wake you up, lol

Great post! Did you know that Guinea fowl that are tamed lose their color and turn white? They are a dark grey in the wild with white spots on their feathers! Blessings! Stephen

First I've heard of that! Thanks.

If you want, I can place a post of Guinea fowl in the wild and I can take photos of their feathers that are here in a vase on my desk next to this PC.

Great video my dear wild man. Guinea Fowls great looking birds ....thanks for sharing

Wow thanks for this piece @papa-pepper ... We often use guinea fowl in hatching other birds egg as well over here ... Glad you brought up this topic... You are too good man!

Good point, they could be used to hatch the eggs of other poultry!

Yeah... That's what could have really gotten me interested in getting one though... But I be just leant other points from you today... Thanks for sharing this man... Learning made easy on steemit 😃

Would LOVE some guinea fowl but suburbia means I have to wait...so I'll just enjoy watching yours first ;D

Not the prettiest "chicken", but certainly very helpful lol. Nice post.

Those birds are a life savor. They call out when coons come around and pick ticks off goats. Not to mention eating chiggers, i freaking love them!

They are the most metal bird on the homestead! I love these guys!

...may run away... Can they be caged or they must always be put in open place like farm?

They are specially used here in Nigeria. Also, we (the Yoruba people of Nigeria) don't eat their heads and legs.

You know how we (Africans) attach spirituality to most things.

Its good to know some of the things you listed above. thanks.

"Guinea Fowl may be considered to be ugly" lol anyway the appearance does not matter when they are fried

Loads of information. Many thanks. Love it. @papa-pepper Followed

Love, love, love guineas! They tend to have a bit of a death wish, but they provide great entertainment value! We've ate quite a few guinea eggs over the years, and if you miss one of the giant piles of eggs they tend to lay, you've got a great arsenal for a nice egg fight, but they do leave a mark, lol!

Eggs from guinea fowl are very healthy for the whole family and their meat is also very tasty

Had some of these before, favorites of the birds we had.

Made excellent alarm systems, ans were friendly as all get out. The ducks were loners and the chickens dicks, but I loved these guys. Unfortunately we moved and took them with us but they ran off with the wild turkeys.

Very beautifully you are expressing your love for that guinea fowl..

Great post as usual! I cannot think about these birds being ugly, though! Beautiful creatures. Love the extra information ❤️

Chicken bald, but great benefits. he can control pests. thank you for sharing knowledge @papa-pepper. good luck

Ever eaten one?

Not yet.

Probably tastes like chicken anyways.... :D

you are CORRECT about the ugly part.
(about the rest of it too..but especially the ugly part)

Hey, @papa-pepper! Guinea fowl are amazing birds. When we first got them, they were a gift from a friend and we were really green as to how to care for these birds being more used to other farm birds. We didn't realize that they were such good fliers until we saw one fly thirty feet up a tree. They do make excellent watch birds. My son trained one to come and sit outside my window in the morning to ask for treats. Quite vocal about it too. The meat is a little tougher but my family likes it as guinea and dumplings which is basically stewed guinea with veggies and dumplings.

very interesting post and thank you for sharing @papa-pepper

Really interesting. Bin having a stressful and long day. This post just calmed my nerves.

It's nice to just read about guinea fowls when i wasnt expecting. It just popped up on my page. Thanks!

Eat the guinea soon then.

Until another post.

I've just started to keep guinea fowl I've 13 6 week old keets being reared by a bantam hen and have 8 more eggs under another broody due to hatch in a week. I just love them !

Curious if you have any predators in the area that you have to worry about (even just household cats) and if so what precautions do you take to protect the birds?

Beautiful animal, but I wouldn't have it at the moment. I would need some outside space! Thanks for the share @papa-pepper!

Great that they take care of the ticks. They are too loud for our urban homestead. The neighbors already called animal control on us when we had more than one rooster :(

This is great ! we don`t keep rabbits on our farm but we do keep fowl .All te information is very interesting Thanks

They are amazing birds they walk around our suburbs here in Cape Town , one hardly sees them flying but now and then you see them take leap :-)

There is a local farm that had a poultry CSA last year. We got a couple of guineas one month and oh my goodness! I thought it might be more "gamey" like a duck or something, but they tasted like a really good chicken. I loved them! Unfortunately, they've had some trouble keeping them around/alive, so we haven't been able to get any since. Once we get our own homestead, guineas are definitely on the short list of animals we want to raise.
