WE ARE DONE WITH QUAIL...

"Goodbye quail!"

At least for the time being. They've been good to us, and we've enjoyed having them around, but for now, we're taking a break. With Chickens, Guineas, and Ducks also laying eggs and provding for our family, we're selling off the remainder of our quail and waiting until later to reintroduce them to our homestead. In this video, we go over some of the reasons why. Enjoy!

Cost benefit analysis is important to the homestead. Cost is not just money but the time and effort. If they only provide a minimal input to the system, can be hard to find a reason to keep them. At least from my experience.

I've been toying with the idea of raising quail, and probably will eventually, but not before I streamline the enclosures and habitats of the animals we already have.

And, truth be told, my reasons for raising them aren't likely the same as yours. The only kids I have to feed have fur.

I may raise Coturnix quails for eggs, but I mostly want to raise native bobwhites, and my primary goal is to establish a healthy breeding population on our property.

Bobwhites don't breed as fast or as prolifically as Coturnix, and they take longer to mature and start laying, but to me they're still more than worthwhile.

They've been overhunted to the point where they're seen only rarely in the wild, when they were once among the most common of bird species, and they're a vitally important link in the food chain for everything from small to apex predators.

And yes, I'll be sad when I see one of our foxes or hawks take off with a bobwhite that I've raised, but that's nature taking its course, which is really the whole point.

I can't bring back the passenger pigeon, but I can help bring back the bobwhites, and that's just a small part of how I can make my own corner of the world better than I found it.

Here's to greening our world.
