WE MIGHT BE EXPECTING

in homesteading •  7 years ago

This is "Daisy" who we hope will eventually be our milk goat.

You'll have to pardon her fur, as she was licking herself and was not notified that we would be having a photo shoot. Before we can milk her, a few things will need to happen, but it looks like the process may have already began!

THE "PROCESS"

The process itself is rather simple:

  • Impregnate
  • Nurse
  • Wean
  • Milk

Technically, you can even skip step number three, as a mother goat can be milked while she is still nursing. Part of the reason that we also have a young buckling with Daisy is that we were hoping one day they would get married and have kids. Here is a picture of the young buck who is currently penned with her.

He is quite a bit younger and smaller than Daisy, but this may not matter much. Interestingly enough, bucklings can "get the job done" and sire the next generation even as young as three to four months old! Although we haven't "caught them in the act" we speculate that Daisy may already be pregnant. Some farmers have been surprised when they realized that a young buckling bred their whole herd!

She has been putting on some weight lately and growing out around the middle in a potentially beneficial way that could indicate pregnancy. We will keep an eye on her moving forward, but if she is already pregnant, then the process has already started! We are still making friends with her, but she is definitely warming up to us.

Hopefully we will have some good news to share later on, and some cute photos of some kids too. This was not only good news for us, but also for @bluerthangreen and @allforthegood, since they have a few does that they plan on breeding in the future. Who knows, perhaps with the arrival of spring we will also have the arrival of some cute kids! Time will tell and we will see, I just wanted to share the (potential) news with you all, and also make sure that others were aware that young bucks could sire the next generation just a few months after birth. You could be surprised if you are not careful!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Just started with goats a year ago. Didn't want three little cute kids to go to tacos. One was pregnant, my dairy goat. So, now her son is a whether & I have 4. Would like to homestead soon. Have them for dairy purposes and for weed eating. Also, yard art. Thanks for your notation on the age of bucklings becoming breedable.

Good to see your homesteading post once more. It's been a while I last saw it. I can remember even asking u about it in your last post.

Good to see that ur goat is pregnant. Goodluck on that and thanks for sharing.

Learnt some things tho - the steps particularly.

Happy Steeming

I don't know about goats but sheep ewe's [mummas] will cross the paddock to the ram, to save his energy, and back up to make it easier for him.
One of the stud breeders said that the best way to get a good crop of lambs was to tie the ram to the fence.
What a good life rams have.

Thank you for the infonya hopefully can continue to be a motivator for us who are beginners this

this is really nice,, I really love milk of goats. It is very delicious and tasty.
You are gonna get some fresh milk there

Its actually great to have you here

Nice to know the goat family might get bigger soon!

Looking forward to the pics of the new goat “children” haha

We will see!

OH, I'm so excited for you and a bit jealous. I'd love to have goats one day. As of now I am happy with my chickens and I do have some quail eggs in the incubator., my first batch from my own quail! don't you love farm animals! Good luck, cant' wait to see the kid one day!

OH, I'm so excited for you and a bit jealous.

Hopefully we can also expand to include quail, so the feeling is mutual. Thanks!

While reading this one, i hear the sound of goats! Hahaha i miss my grandmas place already and the goats in the neighborhood! :)

Seems like a lot of people have goat memories!

Hope your daisy got pregnant and send me some of her kids 🤔. Good luck to your daisy my friend hope soon she will have a healthy family.

And now you can use her to make all sorts of Taylor Swift music video voice (bleat) overs. The ones that people made for I Knew You Were Trouble was hilarious, especially the first time.

That would be wonderful - nothing cuter than baby goats!!!! My little dog is named Daisy :) Cant wait to find out from you for sure .. Exciting!!!

We have a dog named Daisy, too, in our house. But people are cute, too.
Sunshine, good to see you again. Long time no see.

Hi Friend!!! Funny to see you here, was just thinking about you .. I have not been around for a while due to work but am back and super excited to be :) SUNSHINE247

Love the goats and the farm. Would love to have a farm myself someday.

WE are really enjoying it and looking forward to what else this year brings.

Wow this is really educating
I like reading your post because I always learn new things
👍@papa-pepper

I've always wanted to have goats to milk and make my own goat cheese, but ive never had the land to do it on. Hopefully in the future ill be able to live out this dream :) I hope you're right, and you get to have a milking goat soon.

See.. we dont have enough land in Blighty to raise our own. Most of our land ironically is taken up for cattle farming. Shame really I woild love to raise my own.

They look good and healthy man keep it up!

Good post thank you you

LOL - Glad that you liked that part!

Thank you for the post @papa-pepper! Unfortunately have developed a mild intolerance to cow's milk. But have heard goat's milk could be a good option. How long will goats stay in milk?

Great! My number one farmer on steemit.

Hola cerca de mi casa hay cabras son encantadores de vez en cuando comemos queso de cabra y hacemos pizza de este manjar, es exquisito. fidelidades por tu post, es bueno hablar de este tema.

We raise laying hens we so much want to add sheep and goats to our homestead! Thanks for the informative post!

i see that you were not kidding when you posted your proof. :p nice goatee

Found your post, had goats love goats... done all from raising them milking them and helping with the birthing process... nothing like a bottle of nice cool goats milk in the fridge way better than store bought... Your right about your young billy they can start breeding at a very young age... your doe is a nice size doe don't be surprised if she has more than one kid.

One thing you may want to do is familiarize yourself on what to do in case of birthing problems, how to recognize when the doe is in distress and what and how to correct birthing problems, not saying you will have any but being prepared is always good and vets can't always get their in time.

I have also began writing of my adventures on the farm at the moment its just a few funny adventures but I think I may delve deeper into farm life in future posts if they can help others.

Is she a nubian?

Goats are so much fun! We had a goat farm a few years ago, but we had to sell them because we were moving to South America! But now we are back and I would definitely get goats again! I loved milking them!

the title of your post threw me off. Nice animals

grew up using goats milk. Mum used to milk our Nannies daily whilst we were at school, except on weekend, when I got the pleasure. Watch for the bite on the ear. We had a couple that would stand quietly through most of the milking, but then turn their head and bite your ear, or shoulder. It hurts.

Very interesting post @papa-pepper you are incredible friend ..

For all things goat related, you need to talk to @wholesomeroots. She's a goat guru!

Fingers crossed for the 'process' to be successful.

She is a pretty goat)

@papa-pepper. Adding weight around the middle sure indicates pregnancy. It is same with the goats i have here.

Kids are on the wayyy..

Another great story from the animal lover!!!!!!Well written.I have once drink the goat milk. But i never knew the process of it.But thanks to you now I know little bit about it.Thank you for sharing these beautiful things with us.You try to bring us the simple things that we neglect to notice.I have found by being in this platform that you do not need to cross oceans to find the beauty, beauty lies in everything around us.Only thing we have to do is just see them with more closely
-cheers-

i didnt know anything about this homesteading and goats before..it seems they are very nice to learn..things that we should learn by practically engaging in them..i am feeling sad because i miss that knowledge to a great extent..anyway i learning them through you sir :)

Daisy has an adorable face and I have a feeling she is going to be very obliging.

Wow ! i didnt know young bucklings were so fertile at that age @papa-pepper and we (meaning Gaston! )had a few goats out in the Beaverdell untill they escaped somehow and ate all my newly planted flowers and the garden ! lol! Typical goats , cant blame them , hahah ! Good Luck , looking forward to seeing a new little baby goat post !😂💕🐏🐃🐃
