Bounties Of The Land Video/Article Episode 17: Winter Time Greenhouse Rosemary! Video & Informative Article on Medicinal & Healing Benefits!

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

It may be winter time, but here in @gardenofeden we still have many bounties of the land! This isn't because we grow in a tropical region it is because we grow native winter crops and also utilize green houses.

There is always abundance on the land and we cultivate and appreciate it here in The Garden of Eden.

Herbs are some of the most beneficial and important plants to grow all year around because not only do they make almost any dish taste better (cooks don't cook without seasonings) but they are also one of the most densely nutritions foods on earth and have MANY medicinal qualities!

Rosmary is an herb that almost everyone knows as it is one of the most widely used culinary herbs on earth! However its more than just a delicious culinary herb, it has MANY medicinal as well as nutritional benefits!

The scientific name is Rosmarinus officinalis and it is actually in the MINT family! It doesn't taste like or look like mint but so the botanists say!

Here are some of the most well known benefits of rosemary and I assure you there are plenty more!

  • Anti-inflammatory. Maybe the most well known function of rosemary is as an anti-inflammatory agent in and outside of the body. Carnosol and Carnosic acid are two powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds found in rosemary that reduce inflammation of muscles, blood vessels, and joints. Many herbs actually have this very beneficial quality as does rosemary. This makes it an effective treatment for many things, including blood pressure, arthritis, gout and injuries from physical exertion or surgery. It is effective in oral or topical form for these anti-inflammatory effects. This can also greatly improve heart health.
  • Skin Care. The anti aging benefits of rosemary are also well known. Most commonly used in the essential oil form, the leaves of rosemary can also affect the skin internally or topically and have been shown to improve the quality of the skin, while also healing blemishes and increasing hydration and appearance of skin.
  • Relieves Pain.  Rosemary has been topically applied in a paste or salve for hundreds of years to parts of the body in pain. When consumed orally, it is a pain reliever for harder to reach spots, such as headaches. To help with migraines for example, apply an essential oil, salve, tincture or decoction to the temples, or simply smelling the aroma of rosemary as I did MANY times in the video helps to reduce the severity of migraine symptoms.
  • Soothes Stomach. Rosemary has been used by around the world as a natural remedy for upset stomachs,  bloating, and diarrhea.  Just a little bit in food or tea every day can greatly improve the digestive tract.
  • Memory Enhancer! One of the earliest studied benefits of rosemary was as a cognitive stimulant. It was known to improve memory, help to increase intelligence and focus. Rosemary stimulates cognitive activity, and those suffering from cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. It is also known to increase memory retention!
  • Relieves Mood and Stress. The aroma of rosemary alone improves ones mood, THUS why I was smelling it the entire time! It is also a fantastic STRESS reliever! It helps greatly with chronic anxiety and hormone imbalances. You can get these benefits topically or internally!
  •  Detoxifies the Body. Rosemary is slightly diuretic in nature, so is good for flushing toxins in the urine, by increasing the rate at which water leaves the body, it can also help push out pathogens, salts, toxins, and even excess fat when used consistently. It is very beneficial for liver health.
  • Stimulates Blood Flow. Rosemary acts as a stimulant and boosts the production of red blood cells and blood flow. This oxygenates vital organ systems, ensuring their metabolic activities, in addition to stimulating the movement of nutrients to cells that require repair.
  • Boosts Immunity and Aanti-carcinogen. The active components in rosemary are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic in nature. This helps with basically EVERYTHING! Antioxidant compounds are ESSENTIAL to the body's immune system, and rosemary contains a significant amount of these powerful compounds, including rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, betulic acid, and carnosol.
  • Freshens Breath. Rosemary is a natural antibacterial agent, thus is a wonderful breath freshener that also improves your oral health as well as MANY other health benefits as you can see!

There are many ways you can get the medicinal qualities of herbs and in this instance rosemary.

  1. Is Obviously in food, makes it taste better too!
  2. Tea, an easy and effective classic that is especially nice during the cold winter.
  3. Salves, are actually very easy and you can combine multiple herbs for TOPICAL use.
  4. Tinctures are the old time classic which tout the benefits of being very transportable and storable not to mention very POTENT!
  5. Essential oils, probably the most usable format though also the most expensive and hardest to do as an individual or small operation. Buying them is what most people do.

However you choose the medicinal benefits are about the same though the potency varies depending on use.

Check out the video if you like though all the essential info was written out here. I hope you are inspired to support the many many benefits of what nature provides and help it help you!

The herb house looks like a cool setup. Not as much grows out here in Arizona but my Orange tree is doing well this year and I have eaten 3 Oranges off of it so far.

Yea not much grew here either until I spent years making hundreds of thousands of lbs of compost!
Where there is a will there is a way. Whats even more cool is that I did it with trash, guarantee you there is PLENTY of that there in Arizona haha

Thanks for the comment and stopping by~

Hope to see you around soon and share in building a better world.

Amen. I am ever willing. People like you drive us on. We must be better. They world has to be. Thanks for being the difference we wish to see in the world. See you around.

Yes, the governments, religions nor corporations are going to do it. Its up to us and until we all begin to be the example of our ideals the world will continue to be shit.

Exactly. We are responsible for ourselves and we need to take deliberate steps about it. All we have is ourselves and if we fold hands then sit back, nothing is going to be done. We shouldn't be at the mercy of anyone. We should take steps. I like people who think like you. She @everlove never lied when she told me i should read your views and hear you speak.

I am grateful to share content of real value and hope to continue to be an example of improving the earth.

Blessings~*~

I am glad you are chasing this course and you are a positive example. Happy to join you in this.

Hope to see you around soon!

Yess!! Love this. Anyone ever do healing Rosemary baths? I'm really interested in plant baths, I've done lavender but never tried Rosemary!

Oh yes rosemary is a wonderful bath herb!
If you read all the benefits you will see it is very good at cleaning so can replace soap, but it is also VERY healthy for shiny rich skin. PLUS there are lots of other benefits also. Would need to get the bath really hot and steep it like a tea or make big pot of tea then add it to a hot bath.

Thanks for the reminder of steeping it hot like a tea! I'm totally trying this. I'm it'll be awakening and enlivening. Sometimes I rub a drop of the essential oil through my hair and head, helps with focus and mental clarity.

Yes the essential oils are nice and you don't need to steep anything. However you can grow the plants and make the bath tea for free!

Totally, and I love the connection I build with the plants I grow, feel like they offer even more healing benefits when they attune to me as I care for them. Not to mention that it is so much more sustainable to grow and harvest your own 🙌🏼

Exactly!

Oh the bounties!

Rosemary during the coldest winter in quite a while. Outstanding.

Yea it was 9 degrees here last night!

thanks. have a nice day

Better start making better comments or your rep will continue to drop.

LOVE Rosemary and your garden looks fantastic. How cold does it get in the winter at night, where you live? Do you have to heat your greenhouse?

Our winters aren't to bad but last night it got down to 9 degrees F which is LEGIT cold.

Thank you. These photos are shared by these beautiful pictures. These photos are awesome photos.

Glad you like em

Herb is very lucreative..but your location also matters a lot.there are some places herbs are limited, due to weather..so you can help those people by exporting to them.

Indeed.

Great post!
We always use fresh rosemary in our kitchen, but I never knew it was so beneficial. Thanks to you and steemit community we can learn something new every single day.
Resteemed!

Yes Steemit is amazing and its fueled by Steem!

I used to cook with a lot more herbs when I lived in Costa Rica and did all my shopping at the local markets. I miss all the amazing fresh fruits too! lol Trying to connect with homesteaders and off griders, not really able to do it myself yet but it's inspiring and a long term goal of mine is to have a property in Costa Rica and live mainly off grid.

Yes I have lived in cost rica before and loved it. Plenty of fresh goodness there for sure!

yooooooo still keen on getting the gear from ya! The hat and all

Awesome!

Yes be in touch and let me know what one you want or what customers design you want!

Very informative! As you mentioned all things are within nature

Exactly!

I never knew Rosemary has such uses, but you have made me learn a lot. Good job keep it up👍👍👍

That is my intention!
Great to hear it!

SteemOn!

Any tips on how to successfully grow a rosemary plant? I have accidentally killed 2 and I don't know what I'm doing wrong :(

they like a lot of light/sun they don't need to much water so over watering can be an issue. Did you start them from seed or cuttings or an already grown plant in a pot?

Ok, I think I may have overdone it with the water... I start with an already grown plant in a pot

ok next time try much less water! is it outside or inside?

Both I had I kept outside in a partly shaded area

Yes they like a lot of sun.

this is very cool comrade,
for what the plant is a friend, what would be made in medicine.

Indeed

Indeed.
Nature provides everything.

yes friends, every one there must be useful,
we just have to know all the benefits.

Yup, I am helping educate one plant at a time!

Nice work bro, I didn't mean the post, well I do mean the post too, very thorough and informative, but I meant nice work you've got going there. The world could sure use some of the sensibilities your crew applies to the @gardenofeden. (tip's hat)

Agreed!

I appreciate the comment.

Awesome. I've been dreaming of building a cob house (I live in a perfect place to do so) and transitioning my life for awhile. Following you for some inspiration.

Yes I have built quite a few and would highly recommend it!

I hope to continue to inspire and if you have not yet checked out @gardenofeden be sure to do so as they are far and away the most progressive sustainable operation on Steemit.

It's a really amazing working, actually gardening is my hobby.
