Young Fawn Grazing in our BackyardsteemCreated with Sketch.

The other evening we glimpsed a young fawn grazing on some wild edibles in our backyard. There is no shortage of food for deer and other critters around here. We enjoy seeing them wander into the backyard from time to time. There are many small homesteads in the area and larger farms surrounding us so the deer feel pretty safe here.

The dense brush provides plenty of cover and they can move through much of it without being seen. A lot of our property was very wild when we moved here and I've been working to get it cleared out a bit more.

White tail deer are the most common found here in central Oklahoma, with its cousin the mule deer more common north towards Kansas. They will eat your crops if they find them. They came through one night and ate half a row of my beans.

While beautiful to look at and watch, they can become a pest if enough of them find your crops. Luckily deer are good to eat so you can pay them back for destroying your hard earned crops.

Have you seen deer on your property? Are they a pleasure or pest to you? Let me know and thanks for upvoting!

you are lucky....

In my country, deer is not a pest. In Indonesia, this is a protected animal. the government set a ban on hunting. nice to see where you can easily see deer.

In some states here they actively encourage hunting because of the large number of vehicle vs. deer accidents on the roads and highways. They love to jump out at the last second as you are driving if you aren't careful. They also do a lot of damage to crops as well. Some land owners lease their property to deer hunters to help control the population.

I live in a small city on a double lot that connects to a heavily traveled Avenue on the back side and a much less traveled city street on our frontage side. When we first moved in I watched small herds of deer grazing through our back yard every morning and was astonished that they would come right into the city lol. They were fun to watch at first, but it didn't take long for them to become unwanted pests. They nibbled along taking the tender shoots and best parts of the different plants that they found as they grazed by. Now I realized why all of the former owners fruit trees had died and were just dead sticks waiting for me to cut them down. Forget about flowers or any vegetable reaching maturity, they waited until just the right moment and poof, it was gone.

So I began a campaign to get rid of them. First was the store bought powders and sprays, some of which smelled really bad. These worked for a couple of days but you had to keep reapplying it. After awhile the deer started getting used to it and I would walk out to find the top of some plant missing. My wife's beautician is a family friend and I asked her save up some human hair for me. I placed some of this hair in small cloth bags or wrapped it in a rag and placed them strategically around my yard, then I just spread the leftover hair out on the ground in the most important areas. I had also started collected small bottles of urine which I dribbled every few feet along my property line every other day. This worked a lot better than the store bought stuff and it cost me nothing but a little effort.

The last straw for the deer in my neighborhood was when the lady that lived across the road from me build a fence around her yard so that her dogs could run free. It turned out that this was the path that the deer had been using and the fence plus two large dogs made their efforts no longer worth the risks. The fence remains but the dogs and the former owner have moved away, but apparently the deer found, or made a new trail and are off annoying someone else now. ;)

I'm glad they haven't been too large of a burden on us yet. We keep our garden up on higher ground and they haven't bothered them but the one time. If I saw that many on our property I would be up in my treestand with a bow every morning this fall.

We have a momma dear with triplets that visit our property quite often! Strange enough we also have a momma raccoon with triplets on our property too! It seems it's the season for triplets!

Unfortunately raccoon are not welcome here as they love to eat our chickens :(

We are planning on getting chickens at some point so we're gonna have to realllllly stay on our toes...

I have had luck using a live trap baited with a little bit of dog food. I keep it right next to the chicken run. The chickens will learn not to go inside after a while. It's your choice on how to rehome the critters that wander in. Lots of possum here too which like to eat chicken as well.

Good post I really like this post, I will wait for the next post

God's creatures are beautiful and seeing a young fawn has its good and not so good reasons.
yes, eating your garden is the not so good, but to see him/her scampering through your property is so nice. I could 'deer watch' all day long while sipping iced sweet tea.

Nice Post

Like you I like to see deer. They aren't too much of a problem here and one of our friends is actually raising deer for meat.

Little bambi :) So cute!

You'll have to wait your turn, sir.

We don't see them as often as we used to, but occasionally they travel through in a small group. We do have a lone buck out here hiding on site. Thanks for the post. 🐓🐓
