Back at it - Potting up nuts for cold stratification

in homesteading •  6 years ago  (edited)

Now well into fall is the time that nuts are falling or have already fallen from the trees. If you haven't already collected the nuts you want, better get to it!

For the nut trees that you want to grow from seed it is a good time to use the upcoming winter season to stratify the nuts that you collect or purchase.

I recently reached out to a friend that many years ago inherited some amazing nut trees on his property. I asked him if he would sell and ship me some of his Kentucky giant walnuts.

Look at the size of those walnuts!!! They make my hand look like a child's hand :P

he has other walnuts in his grove so these walnuts will produce hybrids but I think some of the offspring will produce the large nut and I am willing to wait and see! in any case his other walnuts are delicious and amazing too.

I put my walnuts in some pots halfway filled with potting soil, along with some American chestnuts and red leaf filberts. I made sure to label each individually and the covered the nuts 2-3x their height in soil.

now they can wait until spring, ride out winter and receive the cold stratification that they need :) if I feel that there will be rodent pressure I can protect my nuts with hardware cloth.

it seems like it was just yesterday I was potting up tree seeds/nuts in the spring.

the spring nursery is just going to sleep now.. many of this year's nut trees have lost their leaves.

have a wonderful day and wishing you many blessings in your garden!!

You must protect your nuts at all costs.

In all seriousness, though... nice work. I used to have a walnut tree on my property when I lived in Texas, and even though it was just one tree, it was great to be able to go out and grab the walnuts when they fell. They were super good when roasted. Very fresh. Now I have a pear tree, but I don't eat or do anything with the pears. Kind of sad, if you think about it, I guess. I just don't like pears. :)

Lol! Nice gif and perfect use for protecting nuts :p that's how I would feel if a critter ate my nuts.

I definitely agree about the joy of collecting fresh nuts! Have you tried drying your pears or making pear butter?

I haven't, but that's a good idea. Thanks!

What a great time of year! It was this season i believe when i found your blog last year! Those new walnuts look amazing!! I think i remember you cold stratifying nuts last year. Are those the new trees from the nuts you blogged about last year? Nature is so amazing!! Beautiful blog as always.

Wow! I've never heard of the giant walnut. That would certainly be worth planting.

Where did you get Chestnuts? My brother was involved with the foundation that is trying to breed blight resistant American Chestnuts. They were getting pretty close.

They were given to me by my friend. You might want to check out Burnt Ridge Nursery.

They have some chestnut seeds european x japanese, european x chinese hybrid and full japanese that are blight resistant:

And many type of seedling/young chestnut trees:

How amazing that your brother was involved in that project!

We found some survivor trees in Central PA that he registered with the foundation for seed harvest. He also planted a few hundred of the latest version of the American x Chinese hybrids that are 18/19 American. They seem to be very hardy.

Love to see it! Such boss walnuts! The black walnuts just don't match up to these giants. I'm excited for you. I'll be seeding some chestnuts (some chinese x american, some chinkapin x chinese) for the first time this year and have been really inspired lately to get more set up for growing oodles of trees. Way to keep up the good work of growing trees!

Awesome! I definitely want to acquire some chestnut crosses seeds this winter as well. Did you find any hands down winners or trying out several?
