Here's how we humanely dispatch our chickens:

Chickens are a fantastic source of eggs...... and MEAT!

I used to want a butchering block SO bad!
I thought it would be pretty easy; you put the chicken's head over the block, (or stump, or whatever), and whack! off the head comes!

Unfortunately, there were no stumps or butchering blocks to be found...

I had read up on the 'Hopper Popper' a cervical dislocation device, but that was too expensive for such a simple thing.

Well, my husband has a friend who welds!
Introducing, the Flapper Decapper!!

Basically two pieces of iron welded into an angle, screwed to the side of my shed. (Painted with engine enamel, because my husband works in a parts store, haha.)

I just slide the chicken's head into the angle, and with a quick YANK off comes the head. It just pulls right off.
I then hold the chicken over a bucket to bleed out and continue with cleaning it.

Butchering is still one of my least favorite tasks, but this device makes it easier for me.
I hope some of you out there will find it helpful!

Thanks for reading, and have a fantastic day!!

Taking a chicken or a rabbit's life always gave me a pause, back when I used to do a lot of it, and I've done a lot of hunting. But as we all know, the rewards far outweigh our temporary discomfort. Not so much for the chicken though, I suppose...

Yes, I think it is important that we realize what we are doing when we take the life of another creature. It shouldn't become easy or fun...
It is a necessary part of life though, if we wish to consume meat, and I think it is better that we physically do the work ourselves, than to just purchase meat from the store, removing the distaste of killing, and forgetting what is given up to eat meat.

+1 for doing the damn thing! lol

Haha, thanks! ;)

I have not seen that method before. Very interesting.

Thanks! It works great for me since I generally do not have help while butchering.
