Deck Progress

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

Howdy again, readers! Today I managed to get back at my deck project for a while. While nothing new has actually been attached to the deck, I made a lot of progress (and a lot of sawdust) on the stringers for my stairs. Provided it's not too yucky out tomorrow they should finally be attached!

Cutting slots and dadoes for the risers:20171025_093246.jpg

I'd set my circular saw blade to 3/4" depth and made a bunch of slices in the location of the dado. A little tap with the hammer and they break loose!20171025_093313.jpg

As a true farmer, I just use whatever tools are available for the job:20171025_093354.jpg

KIDDING! I can hear all the woodworkers moaning in the distance. I used a chisel proper like. It IS just a deck, so my joinery isn't THAT fussy, but a chisel certainly works better than a dull screwdriver.20171025_095628.jpg

I did the majority of the cutting with a circular saw...20171025_095119.jpg
And finished out the slots with a jigsaw.20171025_120528.jpg

This is where the top riser will fit in place. 20171025_100414.jpg
I did it this way (partial slot, partial dado) so that the stringer would be able to fit up against the edge of the deck and be leaning against it from the front, rather than depending on some screws holding it up from underneath.

I made the second outside edge stringer, and got one of two central stringers cut out (the steps are nearly 6 feet wide), and the other one is marked and ready for cutting first thing tomorrow. A light rain began before I got to the second one and power tools and water don't really go together well, so that was it for today.

Otherwise, a same old, same old day on the homestead. I did win a contest, so THAT was cool!

To close, I figured out how to make a gif, so I did one of my sheep! It's less actiony than I wanted, so I'll try for a better one tomorrow too.

LOL you got me with the Screwdriver

The Sheep gif made me thing I was back home in NZ for a second

Hahahaha! I have to admit, growing up on the farm we did use tools unconventionally on occassion (wrench=hammer, prybar, AND shovel) because we had nothing else to hand and had no time to waste driving home to fetch it. But I was just being cheeky this time around!

If the sheep gif reminded you of home, just wait until March and April, when I bring my followers out shearing full time! I'm sure that will bring back plenty of memories!

OHh yes I have pleasant and painful memories from Shearing time on the farm :) and I think its my farm experience that makes me so versatile and innovative, if you dont have the right tool you do have a tool that is tight there :)

And moving sheep too!

Haha just opened the gate to let them into the next pen, where I'd put out fresh hay. They didn't need chasing!

Great job. I did laugh about the screw diver. Nicely explained and the gif looks good. Thanks
