How I Keep Predators Out of the Chicken Coop On Our 1/4 Acre Urban Homestead

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hey guys

I came across an old pic from when I first built the coop. It shows a step that many NEGLECT...protection from digging predators...

My method was to dig out a "foundation" and place cinder blocks under the structure.

So far this has prevented any intrusion.

Whats your method?

Good luck!

We actually buried about 2 feet of extra chicken wire we had. My son dug a trench all the way around the edge of the coop area and we stapled the edge to the bottom of the fencing and coop.

We never had a digger get in.. but one time we forgot to lock the main coop door/gate outside and a neighbor's dog got in.. terrorized the poor chickens and ended up killing about 3 dozen birds.

Ouch, tough break!

Good idea with the wire. Im working on a better door method

We never did figure out the best door method. We just kept adding new locks and bolts at the top of the door.

We mostly use chicken tractors and I did worried about this. We went with the electric poultry netting. When a predator touches the netting get a little jolt and go find easier food. lol

many folk praise the netting!
